Discover Amlwch through three distinct themes: the maritime history of the harbour, traces of copper mining on Parys Mountain, and coastal paths. For your trip planning, it helps to consider these highlights separately. Port Amlwch offers an insight into the history of shipbuilding; on Parys Mountain, the site of the old copper mine and its paths take centre stage, while the Wales Coast Path offers a coastal section with a specified distance.

Harbour and mining history

Porth Amlwch developed into a harbour for shipbuilding. Port Amlwch is a listed harbour that is still in operation and is well worth a visit. Mining history also shaped Amlwch: in the 18th and 19th centuries, Mynydd Parys transformed the town from a small fishing village into one of the most industrialised towns in Wales. Two distinct historical themes therefore sit side by side: the development of the harbour and the industrial transformation brought about by mining.

Discover more at the Watch House

GeoMĂ´n runs a visitor centre at the Watch House in Amlwch Port. It showcases all the main rock types found on Anglesey. This adds a geological perspective on the island to the history of mining and offers a separate focus from the outdoor paths. If you are interested in the landscape and its rocks, you can include this visit as a separate theme in your plans.

Walking on the mountain and along the coast

Parys Mountain has a network of paths around the site of the old copper mine. A level path runs along the upper edge of the Great Opencast to a viewpoint. This gives you a choice between the wider network of paths across the former mine site and a clearly described route with a viewpoint. Both options explore the mining theme in different ways.

By the sea, the Wales Coast Path section from Amlwch Port to Cemaes is 13.25 kilometres long and passes the remote Llanbadrig Church. From Amlwch Port, the Wales Coast Path also leads to low sea cliffs and the coves of Porth Llechog (Bull Bay) and Porthwen. The section’s length gives you a specific distance to plan around, while its named destinations give the coastal route a clear landscape focus. Route details may change, so check the route before your walk.

Amlwch by bike

There is also a cycling route linked to the town’s two central themes: Y Llwybr Copr (The Copper Trail) passes through Amlwch and the landscape of Parys Mountain. You can choose the focus of your trip between a cycling route through the landscape, the paths around the old mine site, and the Wales Coast Path. For walkers, the Coast Path section is the distance specified in kilometres; Parys Mountain focuses on the mine site and the viewpoint.
