Wide sandy stretches, a broad promenade and distinctive piers define the coastal character of Weston-super-Mare. There is also open-water swimming at Marine Lake, aviation history and places with views across the bay. When searching for a hotel in Weston-Super-Mare, you can start by considering whether the beach and water, museums and history, or nature are likely to shape your days more.

Beach, Promenade and Water

The beach is a vast expanse of sand, framed by the broad promenade and the piers. The seafront promenade is level and offers uninterrupted sea views. Donkey rides on the beach have been part of the coastal tradition for more than a century; they are available during the summer and busy holiday periods. Windsurfing and kitesurfing take place in the windy zone. These activities depend on conditions and local rules.

Marine Lake is also located along the seafront promenade. It offers free open-water swimming all year round and non-motorised water sports. As operational arrangements may change, it is advisable to check the current conditions before your visit. The Knightstone Causeway holds back the water in the lake; sluice gates in the embankment filter it regularly. Depending on the tides, you can cross the causeway on foot.

The Grand Pier adds more attractions to the promenade: this covered attraction includes rides, arcades and family activities. The offering may change. The pier is a Grade II listed pier structure. It was built in 1903/1904 to designs by P. Munroe and extended in 1905. The coast thus combines today's leisure attractions with a long architectural history.

Town History and Aviation

Other buildings also tell of different chapters in the town's history. Birnbeck Pier ends on an island, giving it a different form from the Grand Pier. The Tropicana opened in 1937 as a large outdoor swimming pool with Europe's highest diving platform and was the venue for Dismaland in 2015. The Old Thatched Cottage is the last surviving thatched cottage in Weston-super-Mare and is a Grade II listed building. The railway station was designed by Francis Fox in 1875–1876 and completed in 1884.

The Weston Museum tells the story of Weston-super-Mare through objects from the North Somerset Collection. Its exhibitions span from prehistory to the present day. The Helicopter Museum offers a different focus: its collection includes more than 100 rotorcraft from around the world. In a covered, weather-protected hangar, the museum displays more than 80 exhibits. On Open Cockpit Days, you can enter the cockpits of selected helicopters; an experienced guide explains how they work. Dates may change, so check them before your visit. Helicopter experience flights take off from the Helicopter Museum and offer views from 1,000 feet. They are subject to weather and booking availability.

The Weston Aviation Exhibition used a restored former pilots' block to tell the story of the site and aviation activities in Weston-super-Mare. The Weston Aviation Heritage Hangar, which opened in 2026, is dedicated to more than 90 years of aviation history at this site. Together with the Helicopter Museum, these offer several distinct points of interest for anyone interested in aircraft, exhibitions and the history of aviation.

Views and Nature Spots

Worlebury Camp combines a historic site with views of Sand Point, Brean Down and Weston Bay; admission is free. An accessible path leads from the Weston Woods car park to the eastern ramparts. As path conditions may change, it is best to check them before your visit.

Old Town Quarry reopened to the public in October 2025 following extensive restoration and improvement work. Check the current visitor arrangements before travelling. It hosts a community-led programme of events and activities; dates for these may also change. Its diverse wildlife includes woodland and cliff birds, ringlet butterflies and the rare white-letter hairstreak butterfly. The quarry therefore offers a nature-focused experience alongside the coastal and museum themes.
