There are two different ways to explore Wimborne Saint Giles during a stay: the architectural history of the Church of Saint Giles and St Giles House, and walking routes through the surrounding countryside. The historic buildings provide a timeline from the laying of the house’s first stone to the church’s reconstruction; routes and event dates offer further starting points for planning. This lets you decide before your trip whether to focus on the history of the listed buildings, a walk, or a specific event.

Church, House and Historic Garden

The main part of the Church of Saint Giles was built in 1732. Much of the church was destroyed by fire in 1908; it was rebuilt in 1910. The church is a Grade I listed building. These dates mark a clearly distinguishable sequence: the construction of the main part, the disruption caused by the fire, and the subsequent reconstruction.

At St Giles House, the earliest specific marker is the laying of the first stone on 19 March 1650/1. The house is also a Grade I listed building; it shares this designation with the church, although their dates differ. The house’s grounds and Pleasure Grounds are listed at Grade II* on the Register of Parks and Gardens of Special Historic Interest. The River Allen flows through the Pleasure Grounds. The comparison shows that the house and church are Grade I, while the grounds and Pleasure Grounds are listed as a separate garden at Grade II*.

Walking Routes and Countryside

Alongside the architectural history, walking routes offer another perspective: Wimborne Saint Giles has paths that provide access to the surrounding countryside. This means the landscape can play its own part in your travel plans alongside the listed buildings. A 2021 route description recounts a walk along the carriage drive of the Wimborne St Giles estate, through woodland and alongside Ackling Dyke and the Dorset Cursus. If you are planning an organised walk, check current access arrangements beforehand.

Events and Seasonal Dates

The Church Flower Festival takes place annually, with the floral arrangements following a different theme each year. Elevenses at St Giles' serves tea, coffee and cake. It is held on the second Sunday of January, February, March, April, May, August, September and December. The two events offer different pointers for planning: check the current event dates for the festival and the current schedule for Elevenses.

For 2026, the Wimborne St Giles Sunday Teas were scheduled to run from 12 April to 4 October, with tea served from 2.30 to 5 pm. The offering includes homemade cream teas; donations are also collected for local charities. As this season has now ended, check for new dates for future events.
