Canford Magna’s parish church is a late Anglo-Saxon minster church and may have been built around 1050. The Canford School campus, with a nationally recognised arboretum, lies just outside the village. This offers two distinct themes for planning a trip: the development of historic buildings and a landscape landmark on the campus. The parish church draws attention to history; routes around the campus offer a different focus.
The Parish Church in Several Building Phases
The nave, aisles and tower were added around 1200. The nave was extended westwards in 1829, followed by alterations in 1876–1878. The building history therefore spans a possible origin around 1050, medieval additions and changes in the 19th century. When considering the dates, it is important to distinguish between two types of information: around 1050 remains a possible date of origin, while 1829 and 1876–1878 refer to specific later changes. The nave is the main part of the church, with the aisles running alongside it. These terms help explain what was added around 1200 and which part was extended westwards in 1829. The later alterations of 1876–1878 should be distinguished as a separate phase.
John of Gaunt's Kitchen
John of Gaunt's Kitchen is the only surviving part of an important medieval manor house. The kitchen building dates from the 15th century and contains work from the 14th century. The building date and the age of the work it contains therefore differ. In contrast to the parish church, whose history includes additions and later alterations, the focus here is on earlier work within a 15th-century building. This presents two distinct historical patterns: a sequence of changes to the church, and earlier work in a 15th-century kitchen building.
Routes and Practical Information
The campus area provides access to footpaths towards Wimborne, as well as unpaved paths leading to parks and beaches. The destinations differ: the footpaths run towards Wimborne, while the unpaved paths lead to parks and beaches. If you are planning a walk, choose according to your intended destination. Path conditions may change, so check them before setting out.
The turn-off to the parish church is at the main entrance to Canford School. Parking is available at the Church Centre car park or the Church Car Park. Before travelling, check the current route and parking options, as road and parking arrangements may change.
More Activities
The Kingfisher Riverside Platform offers excellent access for wheelchair users and people with disabilities. If this access is important to your plans, check the conditions before visiting.
