Lifton combines distinctive historic buildings with a landscape where paths and activities by the water offer different options. When choosing what to visit, you can distinguish between historic landmarks in the town and leisure opportunities in the surrounding area. The Church of St Mary, Wortham and the Lifton War Memorial are central to its cultural heritage; Roadford Lake and the Two Castles Trail add watersports, walking and cycling paths, as well as a described route to Lewdown.

Historic Buildings and Local History

The Church of St Mary in Lifton is a Grade I listed building. Wortham is also Grade I listed: the manor house in Lifton dates from the 15th century and was remodelled for the Dinham family in the early 16th century. Wortham thus combines its 15th-century origins with a later building phase for the Dinham family. Together, the church and manor house give Lifton a clear architectural and historical focus.

The Lifton War Memorial commemorates 15 members of the local community who died in the First World War. Unveiled in 1920, the granite cross is about 5 m high and takes the form of a Latin cross. Its octagonal plan continues in the four-tiered octagonal base. Later additions commemorate the Second World War. The memorial therefore combines a specific commemorative purpose with a distinctive, geometrically described form.

A Historic Name and a Visitor Note

From 2003, the Fairground Heritage Trust was based in Lifton, initially under the name Dingles Steam Village and later as Dingles Fairground Museum. The museum closed at the end of the 2024 season, so it should not be planned as a currently open attraction. The Trust’s history forms part of the town’s history; for planning a visit, the museum’s closure is the key consideration.

Water, Paths and Landscape

Kayaking, stand-up paddleboarding and sailing are available at Roadford Lake in Broadwoodwidger, in the area around Lifton. There are also nature trails and footpaths for walking or cycling. This offers different ways to spend time outdoors: watersports on the lake or paths on land. You can choose based on whether you are more interested in activities on the water or a walk or cycle ride.

Section 2, the eastern section of the Two Castles Trail, runs from Lifton to Lewdown and follows roads, paths and fields in places. It therefore differs from the individual leisure activities at the lake: here, a specific route section between two places is described, while Roadford Lake offers watersports and paths around the lake. As route conditions can change, check the current route before setting out.

Lifton is surrounded by rolling farmland, wooded valleys and tranquil river landscapes. Lifton also provides access to the Tamar Valley and Dartmoor National Park. These regional attractions complement the choice of historic buildings in the town and activities in the surrounding area. When looking for hotels in Lifton, you can first consider whether historic buildings or outdoor paths and activities will play a bigger part in your stay.
