Broadclyst offers a range of starting points for planning a trip: historic village landmarks, walking and cycling routes, and cultural and nature attractions at Killerton.

Fashion collection and milling history

Killerton House is home to the National Trust’s largest fashion collection, with more than 20,000 historic clothing and accessory items. The specific exhibition content may change. If you are visiting for a particular subject or item, check the current exhibitions before your visit.

Clyston Mill is a historic watermill on the River Clyst, on the Killerton estate in Broadclyst. It is believed to date from the early 19th century and is one of the last surviving watermills in south-west England. Its undershot waterwheel was installed in 1880, but it cannot currently be turned. The mill’s orchard offers visitors a place to picnic; confirm the conditions at the site before travelling.

Layers of history in the village

Broadclyst House is a Grade II listed house dating from around 1830. The parish church of St John the Baptist in Broad Clyst dates largely from the late 15th century and retains significant structural features from the 14th century. The monument at Broad Clyst includes remains of a medieval undercroft and part of the Nonant family’s medieval manor settlement. The Nonants held the manor from around 1100 to 1340. The dates therefore span the medieval manor and the house from around 1830.

Walking routes and orienteering

The Broadclyst Adventurer Walk is an easy, 45-minute circular walk that starts and ends at the bus stop by the Red Lion Inn in Broadclyst. The cycle route from Killerton to the village of Broadclyst is a six-mile circular route through farmland and the Devon countryside.

The route from Killerton to Clyston Mill in the neighbouring village of Broadclyst is also listed as a six-mile circular route; it can be completed on foot or by bike. You can compare the details by destination and mode of travel: one describes the cycle route to the village, while the other is a route to the mill that can also be walked. Killerton also has orienteering courses suitable for all ages and abilities. Check the availability of the courses and maps in advance. Find out about local conditions before setting out; for the trip to the mill, also check the latest opening information.

Countryside and wildlife

The Killerton estate includes habitats home to four owl species, 13 bat species and 28 butterfly species; individual sightings are not guaranteed. Clyst Meadows in Broadclyst is a dog-friendly country park, making it a specific option for outings with a dog. The wildlife at Killerton and the country park offer different points of interest for nature lovers.
