Bampton Castle stands on a prominent ridge; the views stretch across the valleys of the Exe and Batherm rivers and over Bampton. The area’s history and landscape therefore give your stay two distinct focal points.

Heritage in the Town Centre

Bampton Castle is a Scheduled Monument. At Bampton Motte and Bailey, no building structure survives apart from a stone staircase. The designated monument status and the limited surviving built remains therefore sit side by side—a revealing contrast for anyone interested in the history of castles.

The centre of Bampton is designated a Conservation Area. Bampton War Memorial Cross is also listed: it is Grade II listed and commemorates 41 local soldiers who died in the First World War. The two designations relate to different scales of heritage: the town centre and an individual memorial.

St Michael and All Angels Church dates in part from the early 12th century and contains an original late Saxon window arch. Two ancient yew trees stand in the churchyard; they are believed to have been planted more than 500 years ago. The church therefore brings together several historical connections, from its early fabric to a window detail and the older trees in the churchyard.

The church also houses the Bampton Heritage & Visitor Centre. It presents local history through authentic local artefacts, colourful information panels, short videos and oral recollections. The centre is open on Thursdays from 11:00 to 13:00 and on Fridays and Saturdays from 11:00 to 15:00; check the opening times again before travelling. There is an eight-page family booklet with a quiz for the Bampton Town Trail—another way to explore the town’s history.

Trails and Landscapes

Bampton lies on the edge of Exmoor National Park, and the Exe Valley Way passes through the town. The circular walks offer different highlights: the Bampton Woods Circular has panoramic views over the town; the Exe Valley Way and Coldharbour Farm Circular offers views across the Exe Valley as far as the Brendon Hills. If you are choosing between these walks, you can decide based on the view described: the townscape or the more distant valley views.

Bampton Millennium Green includes a wooded area with a small quarry and lime kiln, an established orchard and Lower Luke's Field. These landscape features are quite different from the views associated with the circular walks: here, the focus is on woodland, a quarry, a lime kiln, an orchard and a field identified by name.

An October Event

Bampton Charter Fair takes place on the last Thursday in October. The event has space by the riverside for local produce and traditional skills. If the fair determines your travel dates, check the specific event date against the calendar before travelling. It adds a clearly timed event to the themes of local history and landscape, tied to a particular point in the year.
