Crugmeer is a small hamlet through which the path from Stepper Point to Trevone runs. Another route description gives a circular walk from Padstow via Crugmeer, Trevone and Stepper Point. The two descriptions share some place names but differ in scope: the first describes the route between Stepper Point and Trevone, while the second gives the total distance and estimated duration of a circuit starting from Padstow. When planning, it is therefore important not to apply the circular route’s time estimate to the individual section through Crugmeer.

Walking Paths Through Crugmeer

On the path from Stepper Point to Trevone, the route turns right and then left at a postbox in Crugmeer. After 100 metres, it crosses a hedge and continues through fields. The path is mostly grassy. The postbox, changes of direction and 100-metre distance help with navigation within the hamlet; the grassy surface, by contrast, describes most of the path between Stepper Point and Trevone. Check field access and waymarking locally; path and surface conditions can change seasonally.

The circular route from Padstow via Crugmeer, Trevone and Stepper Point is about seven miles long; the estimated walking time is three hours and 15 minutes. This is an estimate that depends on path conditions and walking pace. On the circuit, Crugmeer is reached after crossing two more fields. From there, the route continues along a road or farm track before descending steeply to Trevone Bay. The total distance provides a sense of the time involved, while the steep descent describes a specific terrain feature beyond Crugmeer.

Coastal Paths and Maritime History

A prominent structure near Crugmeer is the Daymark: the 40-foot-high tower was built in 1826 to mark the harbour entrance for ships. Hawkers Cove is also nearby and is best reached from Padstow on foot via the South West Coast Path. The coastal path to the cove passes abandoned fortifications at Gun Point dating from the Napoleonic Wars. Padstow’s former RNLI lifeboat station was located at Hawkers Cove. The fortifications and former lifeboat station represent different chapters in the history of the coast.

Crugmeer Airfield

Another historical point of interest is Crugmeer Airfield, also known as Padstow Aerodrome and RAF Padstow. It operated from 25 March 1918 to 1919 and was used by the RAF for maritime patrols. Whereas the Daymark’s key details are its construction in 1826 and its role in marking the harbour entrance, the airfield’s specific points of reference are its operation from 1918 to 1919 and its maritime patrol activities.
