Farleigh’s travel highlights range from listed buildings and a historic boundary post to walking, golf and horse riding. Plan your trip around the interests that matter most to you.

Historic Buildings and Their Stories

In the wider area of Chelsham and Farleigh, the Church of St Mary the Virgin is listed as a Grade I building. Its history dates back to around 1100; the chancel was extended in 1250. The Thatched Cottage offers a different perspective on historic construction: this Grade II listed building dates from the 17th century and is located on Farleigh Court Road in Farleigh. It has a preserved timber-framed core, whitewashed brick cladding and a thatched roof. Inside, the timber structure is visible, particularly in the ceiling beams.

The Tax Post on Old Farleigh Road is also a Grade II listed structure. It is located north of the Harrow Public House and marks a boundary where duties were payable on coal and wine. Together, these buildings offer more than an overview of different architectural styles: the church represents a long building history, The Thatched Cottage brings specific construction features to life, and the Tax Post points to an earlier system of duties. Visitors interested in architecture will find different details here from those who are primarily keen to explore the historic function of a boundary marker.

Walking, Golf and Horse Riding

The Vanguard Way walking route runs between Farleigh and Littleheath Wood. Its route is a useful starting point for planning a walk; conditions may change, so check them in advance.

Farleigh Golf Club offers 27 championship-standard holes, designed by John Jacobs. The course consists of three separate nine-hole loops that can be played as three different 18-hole courses. This gives golf its own distinct focus: choosing between the different 18-hole configurations is a different kind of planning from following a walking route. The club is set in peaceful, natural surroundings inhabited by deer, pheasants and other wildlife.

Farleigh Court Equestrian Centre offers coaching sessions with Hannah Shea-Simonds. She is a BHSII and UKCC Level 2 eventing coach. The centre has an indoor and an outdoor arena. If you would like to book a coaching session, confirm the arrangements before your visit.

The activities differ chiefly in their format: the Vanguard Way is a walking route between two named places, golf offers several possible 18-hole configurations, and the equestrian centre offers coaching sessions. This lets you decide whether to base your trip planning on a walking route, a golf configuration or coached horse riding, without combining these offerings into a single itinerary.
