Holton combines a long history of architecture with ancient woodland and a range of sports facilities. Its history spans the 12th-century church dedicated to St Bartholomew, medieval manor house sites and the Gothick-style manor house built in 1815. Holton Wood, meanwhile, has been continuously wooded since at least 1600. The Park Sports Centre in Holton offers indoor courts, classes and a fitness area. For those interested in cultural history, the 12th-century church and the history of the manor houses each offer a distinct perspective on Holton’s past.

The Church and the History of the Manor Houses

St Bartholomew’s Church is dedicated to St Bartholomew, dates from the 12th century and is listed as a Grade I building, the highest category. Holton Park was formerly a deer park and also the site of a medieval moated manor house. Holton Park manor house was built in the Gothick style in 1815 and is now used as a school. The site’s history therefore spans a medieval manor house site and a later building, while the church offers its own sacred dimension.

The Holton House Site

The building sequence at Holton House is described in greater detail. The moated site is considered a late-medieval successor to a smaller walled manor house, located 280 metres to the southeast. The later moat enclosed an island measuring 50 by 54 metres. Its nearly equal side lengths give it an almost square shape and a clearly defined central space. The moated site at Holton House includes building foundations from several phases of alteration, dating approximately from 1450 to 1805. The monument also includes an ice house and storerooms.

Holton Wood and Its History

Holton Wood offers a different focus from the historic sites. It has been continuously wooded since at least 1600 and is a remnant of Bernwood Forest. The woodland floor is carpeted with bluebells and dog's mercury. Alongside the history of the woodland, these specific plants help shape the landscape’s character. At Holton House, the phases of alteration date approximately from 1450 to 1805; Holton Wood has been continuously wooded since at least 1600.

Sports Facilities in Holton

The Park Sports Centre in Holton complements the history and landscape with opportunities for exercise. It has indoor courts for badminton, pickleball and squash. Its studios host yoga, Pilates and group cycling classes, while the fitness area is designed for cardio and strength training. Facilities include indoor court sports, studio activities and fitness training. This helps you choose the centre according to the sport you want, rather than treating its different facilities as a single, uniform leisure programme. The Park Sports Centre is near Wheatley Park School.
