Willen Lake provides a habitat for a wide variety of birds and has a bird hide, as well as water sports and leisure activities. Cultural destinations can also be included: the Milton Keynes Peace Pagoda is accessible via walking and cycling paths around the lake, while St Mary Magdalene Church in Willen offers a different focus with its architectural history. The specific visiting arrangements can help you plan the different activities.

Willen Lake: Birdlife and Paths

Willen Lake covers about 100 acres and is one of the largest man-made balancing lakes in the UK. It provides a habitat for a wide variety of birds. The bird hide by the lake offers an opportunity to observe birds. If you would like to focus on this aspect of the area, the hide is a destination in its own right.

There are surfaced paths at Willen Lake. Designated parking is available at both the north and south car parks. The Milton Keynes Peace Pagoda is accessible via the walking and cycling paths around the lake. Admission is free; check the conditions before travelling. Also check the latest information on path and parking conditions before your visit.

The Peace Pagoda and Church Architecture

The Milton Keynes Peace Pagoda was the first of its kind in the Western Hemisphere. It combines a cultural point of interest with access via the paths around Willen Lake.

St Mary Magdalene Church in Willen is a Grade I listed building. It is Robert Hooke’s only surviving parish church and a rare example of Restoration architecture in a rural setting. A visit to the church therefore focuses both on its connection to Hooke and its architectural classification.

On Mondays, the church is open all day for services and events; at other times, visits are possible by appointment. If you are planning a specific visit to the church, confirm the visiting arrangements before travelling.

Water Sports and Leisure Activities

At the Watersports Centre at Willen Lake, you can hire pedal boats, stand-up paddleboards and kayaks. Kayaks and paddleboards can each be hired for 60 minutes. Both are available on a “first come, first served” basis: advance online reservations are not possible, and availability may vary depending on the weather and demand. The rental period is clearly defined, but access to these activities cannot be secured online in advance.

Treetop Extreme offers three course levels with different heights and difficulty levels. The activities also include Treetop Drop, a 13-metre-high freefall simulator available exclusively as a walk-in experience. Opening hours and operating arrangements may vary.

Adventure Golf at Willen Lake is a 12-hole course with a wildlife theme and educational elements about the local environment. Splash 'n' Play features more than 60 unique water features. Opening hours and operating arrangements at these attractions may also change; check the relevant conditions before your visit.
