Minster brings together an exceptionally well-preserved monastic grange and the building history of St Mary’s Church with its links to the Augustine Camino pilgrimage route. For practical orientation, there is also a railway station of its own and two small car parks.

Monastic Grange and St Mary’s Church

The monastic grange of Minster Abbey is exceptionally well preserved and is a rare early example of this type of monument. It retains standing buildings from the 11th and 12th centuries of high architectural quality, as well as other visible features. The combination of a rare monument type and preserved fabric makes the Grange a distinct point of interest alongside St Mary’s Church.

St Mary’s Church is traditionally known as the “Cathedral on the Marshes”. Its nave has been preserved in its present form since 1150; the choir stalls contain 18 exceptionally well-preserved misericords. The church buildings can also be distinguished by period: the Grange features buildings from the 11th and 12th centuries, while St Mary’s preserves the form of the nave that has been in place since 1150. The misericords add a specific detail of the choir stalls to the picture.

Minster on the Augustine Camino

Minster Abbey is a stop on the final day of the Augustine Camino. The Grove Ferry–Ramsgate section passes through fields to Minster. The two details answer different planning questions: the Abbey is located as a stop on the final day of the route, while the section description explains the approach to Minster through fields. For those interested in pilgrimage routes, this offers both a precise link to the Camino route and a concrete description of the route to Minster.

Guided tours of Minster Abbey are offered every Saturday throughout the year from 11 am to 12 pm, as well as at other times by arrangement. If you are planning a tour, confirm the time before travelling, as arrangements may change.

Open Gardens and suitable travel dates

Open Gardens is an annual village event in Minster. Up to 20 gardens are usually open over a weekend; the specific dates may vary. The event is therefore clearly centred on a weekend. If you are looking for a hotel in Minster for this occasion, check the event date before settling on your travel dates.

Getting there by train and car

Minster has its own railway station on the Ramsgate/Canterbury West route and the Kent Coast Line. Check the current train timetable before planning your journey; the station is a useful reference point for rail travel, but it is no substitute for checking the relevant services.

For travel by car, there are two small car parks: one on Monkton Road and one opposite the Village Hall on High Street. As parking arrangements may change, check the current situation before setting off.
