Lydd offers several distinct themes: All Saints combines unusual dimensions with older traces in its masonry; the Rype is associated with walks and local traditions. There is also a short self-guided trail, a museum focused on the region and a special experience available from Lydd Airport in Kent. If you are planning a trip to Lydd, you can choose between church and local history, outdoor activities and a distinctive experience.

All Saints: impressive dimensions and older traces

At 60.7 metres (199 ft), All Saints is the longest parish church in Kent. Its tower dates from the 15th century, stands 40.2 metres (132 ft) high and is among the tallest in the county. The length and height make different impressions: the church is notable for its extent, while the tower stands out for its height. Both measurements give you specific points of reference for understanding the building.

The north-west corner also tells of another era: remains of a Romano-British basilica from the 4th or 5th century are incorporated into the church walls there. All Saints thus brings together traces from two widely separated periods. If you are interested in the connection between Romano-British history and later church architecture, this provides a distinctive theme for your stay.

Local history around the Rype

The Rype is registered as a Village Green with Kent County Council. It is also associated with a local tradition: the Rype is said to have been granted to the barons of Lydd by the Archbishop of Canterbury after they repelled the Danes in 904. This is recounted as a tradition and should therefore be distinguished from a firmly established date.

Two further points of interest add to this picture. Lydd Town Museum provides knowledge and information about the historic town of Lydd and the surrounding areas. The Guild Hall is a Grade II listed building. The museum and the listed building offer different ways to explore the area: one focuses on the history of the town and its surroundings, while the other has a specific listed status.

Walks with different settings

The Lydd Town Trail is an easy, 30-minute circular walk that you can do independently. Its duration gives the walk a clear time frame; its easy rating and self-guided format make it easy to plan as a short activity. You can also walk on the Rype, with or without a dog. The play area is excluded. This gives you two different options: a trail with a defined duration and a walk on the Village Green, where a specific rule about dogs is stated.

Nature and a special experience

A description updated in September 2024 identifies Lydd Ranges as part of the Dungeness Special Area of Conservation (SAC); its habitat is described as internationally important. This adds a nature and conservation theme to the focus on church and local history.

A different kind of activity is the “Fly with a Spitfire” experience, available from Lydd Airport in Kent. Confirm availability before booking. This gives you a way to distinguish between very different interests when planning: a walking tour, historical topics and a standalone experience.
