Yateley combines protected natural areas, historic buildings and aviation. Most of Blackbushe Airport lies within Yateley’s boundary. This brings very different interests together when planning a trip: paths and waterways on Yateley Common, historic details in the town and trial flights at the airfield.

Nature and paths around Yateley

Yateley Common is protected as a Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI) and Special Protection Area (SPA). The Heathland Walk starts at the car park by Wyndham’s Pool, providing a clearly identified starting point for a walk. The pool itself is also a feature at this same landmark: Wyndham’s Pool is used for recreational fishing. Walking and fishing are therefore two different ways to shape a visit to the Common.

Castle Bottom National Nature Reserve lies near Yateley. It contains one of the most significant valley mires in southern England. Visitors can reach the reserve via a network of permitted footpaths, which connects to existing footpaths and bridleways outside the reserve. Castle Bottom therefore offers a different focus from the Heathland Walk: the valley mire and the reserve’s network of paths are its defining features, while the named walk and Wyndham’s Pool are the main attractions on the Common.

Historic buildings and traces of the past

The wooden bell tower of St Peter’s was built around 1500. Yateley Hall is an early 18th-century building; part of the Hall’s medieval moat remains. Together, these details offer different historical perspectives. For the bell tower, the focus is on an approximate date of construction. At Yateley Hall, by contrast, visitors can see a more recent building alongside an older, partially preserved moat. The town’s history thus spans more than one period, without reducing the buildings to the same era. The bell tower is older than Yateley Hall.

Trial flights at Blackbushe Airport

Blackbushe Airport offers trial flights in light aircraft with qualified flight instructors. Participants are allowed to take control during the flight. This makes the flight an active introduction to flying and gives aviation a different role from Yateley’s nature and history attractions. For travellers interested in flying, this is a specific consideration when choosing activities.

Plan your stay around your interests

When looking for hotels in Yateley, you can first consider what you want your trip to focus on: nature trails and waterways, historic buildings or a trial flight. These themes are quite distinct and provide a practical guide for your own planning, without requiring a set itinerary.
