Hastings offers several distinct starting points for a stay: the castle ruins on West Hill, the building history of Hastings Pier, museums and the coastal scenery of Hastings Country Park Nature Reserve. You can use these to shape your plans depending on how you want to balance culture and nature.

Castle and Building History

Hastings Castle, the ruins of a castle with a keep and bailey, stands on West Hill in Hastings, East Sussex. This combination draws attention to different parts of the complex. If you are interested in castles, Hastings Castle offers a clear historical focus.

Hastings Pier was built between 1869 and 1872 to designs by engineer Eugenius Birch. It reopened on 21 May 2016. The construction and reopening belong to different periods in the pier’s history: it was built in the 19th century, while its reopening is dated to a specific day in 2016.

Museums and Maritime History

At Hastings Museum & Art Gallery, you can explore art, culture and history from around the world. This offers a broader cultural perspective alongside local historical topics. Hastings Fishermen’s Museum focuses on maritime history. It is housed in a former fishermen’s church, built on the beach in 1854 for the local fishing community. The building and its former use provide a tangible setting for the town’s maritime history.

At Hastings Fishermen’s Museum, visitors can board the Hastings fishing boat “Enterprise,” built in 1912. The opportunity to go aboard and visitor details may change, so check them before your visit. Admission is free; donations are welcome. As the admission policy may also change, it is advisable to check before visiting.

Coastal Scenery, Woodlands and Funicular Railways

Hastings Country Park Nature Reserve is part of a unique coastal landscape in the southeast. The reserve has three ancient gill woodlands: Ecclesbourne Glen, Fairlight Glen and Warren Glen. If you want to include nature and scenery in your plans, you can focus on the wider coastal landscape or specifically on the three named woodlands.

The East Hill Lift is the steepest funicular railway in the United Kingdom and gives visitors easy access to Hastings Country Park. The West Hill Lift has a different feature: it runs through a tunnel, and its lower station is on the pedestrianised George Street. By comparison, the East Hill Lift is notable mainly for its steepness and access to the park, while the West Hill Lift is characterised by its tunnel route and station location.

Visitor Centre Orientation

Hastings Country Park Visitor Centre is on Lower Coastguard Lane, opposite the main car park for the Firehills area of the park. If you plan to visit the Centre, note that facilities may change; check in advance if you need to know what is currently available.
