Discover Doune from several perspectives: medieval architectural history, Roman history, nature trails and events each offer a different focus. Doune Castle, Doune Roman Fort and Doune Ponds represent this range, alongside the Doune & Deanston Heritage Trail and Deanston Distillery. You can tailor your trip to the subject that interests you most, rather than trying to fit every activity into a single itinerary.

History Through the Ages

Doune Castle is one of the largest and best-preserved 14th-century castles in Scotland. The present castle was probably built or remodelled between 1380 and 1400 on the site of an earlier castle for Robert, Duke of Albany. The castle has also featured in Monty Python and the Holy Grail, Outlander and Game of Thrones. Its architectural history and screen appearances offer two different points of interest for a visit.

Doune Roman Fort dates from the late 1st century AD and is a rare example of a single-phase Flavian fort. It controlled a local river crossing and served as a base for operations in the surrounding area. Together with the castle, the fort shows just how far apart the historical periods associated with Doune’s structures are.

Bridge of Teith adds another perspective: it is a stone arch bridge dating from 1535. This date is well after the Roman period of the fort and the castle’s medieval origins. It stands alongside the two historic sites as another structure from a different period.

Nature Trails and Tours

Doune Ponds is a 16-hectare nature reserve on the site of a former sand and gravel quarry. A network of paths offers walking routes and is suitable for people with different mobility needs. Path conditions may change with the weather. The car park on Station Wynd provides direct access, including for people with mobility impairments. Check local parking information before your visit, as arrangements may change. With a little luck, you may spot red squirrels in Doune; sightings are seasonal and not guaranteed.

The Doune & Deanston Heritage Trail takes in more than 2,000 years of history and leads to historic and nature-based attractions. Another named route is the Commonty Walk and Doune Trail (The Old Railway Line). This circular route is 1¾ miles or 3 km long, runs along the northern edge of Doune and includes some uphill sections. Route conditions and waymarking may change; check for current guidance before setting out.

There is also a 45 km day trip by bike from Callander via Doune and Dunblane. This route differs considerably from the 3 km circular walk: one option is a walking route along the northern edge of Doune, while the other is an extended day trip by bike. The route details can help you choose the type of outing that suits your travel plans.

Distillery and Events

Deanston Distillery is located in a former cotton mill on the banks of the River Teith. Bus No. 59/C59 to Callander stops right outside its visitor centre. If you plan to use this connection, check the timetable before travelling, as bus services may change. The former cotton mill site adds a distinct note of industrial history alongside the castles and bridge.

The Doune Speed Hillclimb Course hosts two rounds of the British Speed Hillclimb Championship and four rounds of the Scottish Hill Climb Championship each year. Event calendars and championship formats may change. If a race is the reason for your visit, check the exact dates for your travel period.

Doune is easily accessible from the Highlands and the Trossachs National Park. If you are looking for hotels in Doune, you can use the purpose of your trip as your first filter: architectural history, nature trails or a specific motorsport event each brings a different focus to your planning.
