In Gorebridge town centre is the Conservation Area, designated in 1978, which focuses on Main Street. There are also walking trails, historic architectural and industrial heritage, and views across the countryside to the south and west. The town’s history can therefore be considered as a distinct focus alongside walks and views.

Walking trails and directions

All ten walks in the brochure start at Gorebridge Rail Station. The Gorebridge Circular Walk is 7.5 miles long, marked throughout and follows a clockwise route. The ten brochure walks therefore share a starting point; for the Circular Walk, the distance and direction provide additional practical guidance. This distinction can help you choose: if the starting point is the main consideration for your plans, you can focus on the shared starting point of the ten walks. If you are considering a particular route, you can take the Circular Walk’s distance and direction into account. Gore Glen is a Woodland Trust Walk. Trail conditions can vary, and waymarking may need maintenance. Check both before your walk.

Main Street and the landscape

Main Street’s location offers picturesque views of the countryside to the south and west, including the Moorfoot Hills and the Pentland Hills. The focus of the Conservation Area and the views in two directions therefore represent different aspects of the town. When planning your trip, you can consider the townscape in the centre and the named hill ranges as two distinct points of reference in Gorebridge.

Newbyres Castle

Newbyres Castle is an L-shaped 16th-century castle with an enclosing barmkin wall; fragmentary remains survive. Its two architectural features can be distinguished: the L-shaped plan describes the form of the castle, while the barmkin wall is its enclosing boundary. The site is of national significance because historical research and archaeological excavations provide evidence for the study of defensive architecture and the domestic life of the lesser nobility in mid-16th-century Scotland. It also has further evidential potential.

Industrial history in Gorebridge

Stobs Mill gunpowder works was founded in 1793 and was the earliest gunpowder works in Scotland. It therefore dates considerably later than the 16th-century castle. The historical subjects also differ: Newbyres Castle concerns defensive architecture and the domestic life of the lesser nobility, while Stobs Mill concerns the history of gunpowder production. This comparison places two distinct chapters of the town’s history in their chronological and thematic context.

Gorebridge Heritage Trail

Historical information panels are located along the entire Gorebridge Heritage Trail. While Newbyres Castle and Stobs Mill each represent a named historical architectural or industrial subject, the panels extend along the whole route. This sets the trail apart from the two individual historical subjects: here, the information is distributed along the route.
