Bathgate brings together town history, a programme of performances and landscapes as distinct highlights for a stay. Options include a 60-minute History Trail, park walks, golf courses and challenging cycling. When planning your trip, you can focus on these specific interests and weigh up travelling by train or road.
Discover the Town’s History on Foot
The Bennie Museum opened on 20 May 1989 as a museum dedicated to the history and life of Bathgate. Another way to discover historic buildings and places is the Bathgate History Trail: the route is designed as a 60-minute walk through the town centre. There are 14 information panels along the trail, with another at the entrance to Kirkton Park. The stated duration gives the trail a clear timeframe, while the panels mark stops in the town centre and at the park entrance.
Theatre, Wetlands and Nature
The Reconnect Regal Theatre is a unique Art Deco venue in the centre of Bathgate. Its programme includes professional and community entertainment: children’s shows, films, theatre, comedy, music and club nights. As schedules change, it is worth checking dates for your travel period. This makes it easier to plan a possible visit to a performance.
The Bogburn Flood Lagoons in Bathgate offer a different kind of landscape. They comprise three open freshwater pools surrounded by marshy grassland and marsh. This habitat is favoured by waterfowl. Nearby, Tailend Moss is also an important area for bog plants and damselflies and dragonflies. Together, these two places offer a connection with nature that differs from the historic sites in the town centre.
Balbardie Park and Golf
Balbardie Park is a large, multi-use park in open, rolling countryside with views. The Peace Mile walking route circles the park. If you would like to include golf in your trip, there are two different course formats to choose from: Bathgate Golf Club has a mostly level 18-hole course measuring 6,328 yards, with a par of 71. Balbardie Park Golf Course is a 9-hole course in Balbardie Park of Peace, near Xcite Bathgate. It is also open to non-members; check the current conditions before visiting. The number of holes distinguishes the two formats, while Bathgate Golf Club’s course also has details on length, par and layout.
Cycling in and around Bathgate
Bathgate 28 follows the Union Canal towpath and National Cycle Route 75. These off-road sections allow traffic-free cycling. At the same time, Bathgate 28 is a challenging ride into the Bathgate Hills, with views across much of Central Scotland, including the Trossachs and Ben Lomond. The rocks of the Bathgate Hills formed more than 330 million years ago. Anglers can also enjoy fly fishing at Ballencrieff Fishery, which caters for anglers of all experience levels.
Plan Your Journey
Regular train services connect Bathgate with Edinburgh and Glasgow. Check current timetables before travelling. For road access, the town centre is close to junctions 3a and 4 of the M8. Train connections and access to the M8 therefore provide two specific reference points for planning your journey, without implying any particular travel time.
