Those choosing Gairloch as a destination will find a range of things to explore: a museum devoted to local history, wildlife-watching trips, a sandy beach and walks through a glen and arboretum. If you’re deciding between culture, water and outdoor activities as you plan your trip, you can focus on the exhibition and its archaeology, wildlife or the different walking routes.

Local history in a converted nuclear bunker

Gairloch Museum is housed in a converted nuclear bunker and showcases the region’s history, culture and natural heritage. Its main collection spans more than 7,000 years of local history, from the region’s earliest settlers to the engineering history of the Rubh Re lighthouse in the 20th century. The collection also includes the lighthouse’s original lens. The exhibition thus brings together the region’s long history and a specific object from lighthouse engineering.

The Achtercairn Archaeology Trail is also part of the museum’s offering. Volunteer Jeremy Fenton leads the walk; if you’d like to join this tour, check the schedule in advance. Alternatively, you can explore the trail independently using a guidebook available from the museum shop. Every Wednesday, the Overside Wool project demonstrates at the museum how wool is made from a fleece. It’s also worth checking the schedule in advance for this event.

Wildlife-watching trips

Gairloch offers a range of wildlife-watching experiences. Hebridean Whale Cruises runs whale- and wildlife-watching trips from Gairloch. The Gairloch Marine Life Centre offers educational wildlife trips with a marine biologist. Whale and wildlife watching are the focus of Hebridean Whale Cruises, while the Marine Life Centre’s offering includes insights from a marine biologist. If you’re planning a trip, check the current schedule in advance.

Beach and walks around Gairloch

Gairloch has a sandy beach below the golf course, accessible to everyone via wooden boardwalks. Gaineamh Mhòr beach can be reached via a wooden boardwalk from the public beach car park at the golf club. The Gairloch Beach and Pier circular walk crosses Gaineamh Mhòr to Charlestown Pier, then returns through Flowerdale Arboretum.

Another walking option is the signposted route through Flowerdale Glen. It passes through a protected valley to a notable waterfall. The route is mostly easy, following marked paths, but becomes rougher near the waterfall. It starts at a car park opposite the turn-off to Gairloch Harbour.

The two walks differ in what they take in: the waterfall is the destination on the Flowerdale Glen walk, while the circular route links the beach, pier and arboretum. You can choose between the routes based on the landscape features you’d like to see along the way.
