At low tide, the beach by Elie harbour joins up with Earlsferry to form an almost one-mile-long, uninterrupted stretch of golden sand. Walks are also part of the coastal landscape: Elie Ruby Bay is part of the coastal path and offers routes through the surrounding countryside. This means you can choose between time on the beach and getting out into nature.
Coast, paths and water sports
At Ruby Bay beach, you can enjoy a picnic, paddle, swim in open water, kayak or sail. The sheltered bay at Elie harbour is suitable for beginners who want to try windsurfing, canoeing or water skiing. Elie Watersports offers courses in dinghy sailing, windsurfing and kayaking. The activities on the beach and in the bay offer different things; choose based on whether you would rather spend time by the water or take a course in one of the available sports.
For views beyond the town, Fife’s Fife Coastal Path offers both very flat, easy sections and more challenging hikes. You can walk it in short stretches or as a long-distance trail. This variety is a regional feature in its own right, while the coastal path at Elie Ruby Bay offers walks through the local countryside.
Architectural history and golf
Elie Ness Lady’s Tower is the circular Gothic rubble-stone shell of a former summerhouse dating from the late 18th century. It was built as a changing room for Lady Anstruther to use when bathing. Its form, materials and former purpose give the building a specific cultural and historical connection: it is not a summerhouse still in use, but the surviving shell of a historic building.
Golf is also part of the town’s history: golf has been played on the grounds of Elie Links for more than 600 years. Elie Links, Golf House Club, is open to visitors year-round. If golf is part of your visit, check the tee-time arrangements before you travel. The year-round opening to visitors and the tee-time arrangements are two separate points to consider when planning.
Seasonal highlights and relaxation at the harbour
For a nature-focused visit, the rough grassland beside Elie Ruby Bay puts on a striking display of primroses in spring and early summer. During the summer months, The Ship’s cricket team plays teams from across the United Kingdom on the stretch of beach in front of the pub; dates may vary. The flowers and cricket therefore take place at different times of year, which you can take into account when choosing when to travel.
Elie Seaside Sauna is located at the harbour, overlooking Elie beach, and offers hot-and-cold therapy. There are two saunas: Shore can be booked by the seat, while Dune is available for private use only. Check the booking arrangements before you travel if you plan to visit. There are also toilets, parking and step-free access at the harbour. Lifeguards and first aid are available seasonally; if you plan to use these services, check their seasonal availability for your visit.
