Lochgilphead lies at the head of the short loch, Loch Gilp. Loch Gilp is an inlet on the western shore of the much larger Loch Fyne. This setting and the town’s history as a planned settlement offer two interconnected perspectives: the waterscape and its historical development. Lochgilphead was first laid out as a planned town in the late 18th century and grew in importance after the nearby Crinan Canal opened.
Crinan Canal: history and the route to Crinan
The Crinan Canal was originally built as an alternative route for sailors to avoid the arduous journey around the Mull. You can explore this history on a trip around the area: from Lochgilphead, you can walk or cycle along the scenic towpath to Crinan. The route offers a tangible way to connect with a subject that was important to the town’s development.

Kilmartin Glen lies six miles north of Lochgilphead and contains more than 350 monuments. The glen offers a clear focus on heritage. If you’re looking for trails through woodland instead, nearby Achnabreac Forest has numerous waymarked trails through ancient woodland. Kilmory Castle Gardens are about a mile east of Lochgilphead and offer woodland walks. The options differ mainly in their focus: monuments in Kilmartin Glen, or woodland walks and waymarked trails.
