Lumphanan offers several clearly distinct reasons to stay: Peel Ring represents an earthwork castle and its medieval history, the golf club offers a 9-hole course, and the Lumphanan Paths Group’s walking trails follow the Old Military Road, with views of Lumphanan and the Cairngorms. This lets you choose whether to focus your stay on history, golf or scenery.

Peel Ring: Earthwork and Castle History

Peel Ring of Lumphanan is a well-preserved example of an earthwork castle of national importance. Its surviving features include a large earth rampart and the former water-filled moat; the remains of a castle are also at the ring. The earliest record of the castle dates from the 13th century. Peel Ring was probably the scene of Sir John de Melville’s submission to Edward I in July 1296.

The structure and the historical record offer two different ways to understand the site: the rampart and moat describe the fortification, while the written evidence from the 13th century and the probable event of 1296 provide the historical context. These dates serve different purposes: the first marks the earliest record of the castle, while the second refers to a presumed episode.

Route to Peel Ring

As of 1 September 2026, a fenced path leads from the village of Lumphanan to Peel Ring without using the main road. Since the route may change, check its current course before setting off.

Golf Club and 9-Hole Course

Lumphanan Golf Club welcomes visitors of all ages and abilities. Its 9-hole course is enjoyable but challenging, with spectacular views of the countryside. The welcome for different groups of visitors and the challenging nature of the course answer different questions: who is welcome is not the same as how the course’s difficulty is described. Check visitor conditions and current course details before playing, as course information may change.

Walking Trails with Views of Lumphanan and the Cairngorms

The Lumphanan Paths Group’s walking trails follow the Old Military Road and offer views across Lumphanan and of the Cairngorms. This gives the walking option two specific landscape features: views across the village and views of the Cairngorms. In contrast to the golf course, the focus here is the route along the Old Military Road; the club offers a round of nine holes with views of the countryside. You can therefore compare walking and golf as different outdoor activities, rather than judging both solely by their views.

Stothert Memorial Centre

Stothert Memorial Centre is a Category C listed building in Lumphanan. Alongside Peel Ring, it offers another cultural heritage topic: the ring is defined by its earthwork castle, remains and medieval history, while the centre is notable for its listed status. This comparison shows that Lumphanan offers both archaeological and built heritage.
