Walking in Wilpshire

Wilpshire’s public footpath network is accessible from all parts of the village and ranges from short walks to long-distance hikes. One specifically named route is Wilpshire Walk 1 – Across Wilpshire Moor: it is 3.5 miles long and of moderate difficulty. This distance and grading apply to Walk 1, not to the entire network as a whole. This brings together the general range of local options and the specific profile of an individual route. Converted, the stated length is about 5.6 kilometres, making it possible to compare Walk 1 with other routes given in kilometres.

Walk 1 starts at Wilpshire Methodist Church and leads to the ridge of Wilpshire Moor. Waymarkers guide you through the grounds of Carr Hall; the route crosses a footbridge. Before setting out, check for any route changes and local access to the starting point.

Another walking option is Wainwright’s Way, a long-distance footpath that passes through Wilpshire in the Dean Clough area. This is on a different scale from Walk 1: the 3.5-mile distance and difficulty rating apply to the local route, while Wainwright’s Way is a long-distance footpath passing through the area.

Travelling by train

For travel planning, it is worth checking Ramsgreave & Wilpshire railway station. There is an hourly service every day, as well as additional services during weekday peak hours. The Yorkshire Dales Explorer also calls at the station twice every Saturday throughout the year. If your journey depends on one of these services, check the current timetable and operating details in advance.

History and landscape

Wilpshire Golf Club was founded on 20 June 1890. The present course was designed by James Braid, who made use of the natural features of Wilpshire Moor in its design. Wilpshire Moor thus features in two distinct contexts: as the destination ridge on Walk 1 and as a landscape feature incorporated into the course design.

The larger Wilpshire Methodist Church officially opened on 16 April 1903 and is also the starting point for Walk 1. The Blackburn Orphanage, built by 1891 on Whalley Road in Wilpshire, is also part of the area’s history. The club’s founding in 1890 and the orphanage’s construction by 1891 were close in time; the church opened in 1903.
