St Chad and Market Place are the historic focal points of Poulton-le-Fylde’s town centre. Its preserved town plan, Victorian and Edwardian architecture, and regular weekly market give the town several distinct points of interest. When planning your visit, you might consider whether you are most interested in architectural history, market life, green spaces or local transport links.

Historic town centre and architectural history

St Chad is a Grade II* listed church in Poulton-le-Fylde’s Conservation Area. This area was first designated in 1979. The historic town plan is centred on the church and Market Place, and the compact settlement pattern has been preserved. The listed church, the designated area and the layout of the town centre are among the key features of the town’s history.

Victorian and Edwardian architecture is particularly prominent in the historic townscape. Two other points in time extend further back: Market Cross dates from the 17th century, and Poulton-le-Fylde’s roots go back to the Domesday Book. These features offer different ways to explore the town’s history—from its earlier local origins to the building periods that have most shaped its historic character.

Chapel Street can also be located precisely on the town plan: it runs through the town centre alongside St Chad’s churchyard. Together with the town plan centred on the church and market square, it is a useful reference point if you are interested in the layout of the historic centre.

Weekly market and local offerings

The general weekly market is held regularly on Mondays, except on bank holidays, in the pedestrianised market square. On market days, fresh produce and local specialities are offered near St Chad’s church. The selection may vary from week to week. Market arrangements can change, so check the specific date and bank holiday exception before your visit.

Market day combines a regular weekly schedule with offerings that may not be the same every week. If you are including the market in your plans, keep both in mind: Monday is the regular market day, while the available produce and specialities may vary. This lets you plan your visit to the town centre around the market day without assuming the selection will always be the same.

Park, path and landscape

Vicarage Park borders the town centre and is used by families, dog walkers and crown green bowlers. It is another local point of interest alongside the historic town centre and market square. Part of the Wyre Way footpath also lies in Poulton-le-Fylde. Path conditions can change, so check the current conditions before planning to walk this route.

East of Poulton-le-Fylde, farmland consists predominantly of pasture, with a limited amount of arable land and woodland. This distinguishes the landscape east of the town from the compact settlement pattern around St Chad and Market Place. These offer two different perspectives for finding your way around the town and its surroundings: the historic layout of the centre and the agricultural landscape to the east.

Getting there and annual events

Poulton-le-Fylde has its own railway station. Bus services connect the town with the town centres of other towns in the Wyre District and with the coast. Rail and bus offer different options for getting there and planning the rest of your journey. Services and timetables can change, so check the current connections for your travel date.

The Poulton Gala takes place every year on the first Saturday in June. It includes a large parade through the town and live entertainment; the date and programme vary from year to year. For the 2026 parade, a route through the town and back to Cottam Hall Playing Fields was described. Future routes may change. If you are planning a trip to the gala, check the date and programme for the relevant year.
