Ramsbottom brings together an urban community park, a conservation area with stone architecture, traces of industrial history and walks with a range of themes. The market and heritage railway add to this selection. You can tailor your stay to the townscape, exercise, outdoor art or local stories.

Park and walks in Ramsbottom

Nuttall Park is a 10.70-hectare urban community park in Ramsbottom. The grounds are mostly level; the paths are well maintained, and the park is accessible to wheelchair users and families with pushchairs. Check the current path conditions before your visit.

The Ramsbottom and Summerseat Walk starts in the town centre, passes through Holcombe and Summerseat, and then returns to Ramsbottom. The Irwell Sculpture Trail offers a different focus: as an outdoor art experience, it runs through Ramsbottom and beyond. The two options therefore differ both in the places they visit and in their theme.

Architecture and local history

The Ramsbottom Conservation Area is centred on Market Place and extends along Bolton Street and Bridge Street. It illustrates the stone architecture characteristic of the valley north of Bury and includes a considerable number of listed buildings. The protected townscape brings individual streets and buildings together as a distinct theme for a stay in Ramsbottom.

Peel Bridge was built in 1789 and was a toll bridge until 1900. Textile printing is also part of the industrial history: Peel and Yates introduced it to Ramsbottom in 1783. Peel Tower was built in 1852 in honour of Sir Robert Peel; from there, views extend across Manchester and North Wales. The dates place these stories in different periods: the bridge followed textile printing six years later, while the tower was built in the 19th century.

The East Lancashire Railway also offers a historical perspective. It is a heritage railway on which steam and diesel locomotives run between Heywood, Bury, Ramsbottom, Irwell Vale and Rawtenstall. If you plan to take a train ride, check the current timetable.

Market, event and getting there

Ramsbottom Market is a weekend market, open every Saturday throughout the year. Regular traders offer fresh produce such as fish, fruit and vegetables; as the mix of traders can change, it is worth checking the latest market information before your visit. The Ramsbottom Jigsaw Festival takes place every September at St Paul’s Church in the centre of Ramsbottom. The market and festival are therefore different calendar fixtures: a weekly event and an annual one.

Several bus routes serve Ramsbottom. Stops are located near the East Lancashire Railway station, on Bridge Street and at Market Place. Routes and timetables can change, so check current services before setting off.
