Chester combines Roman history, medieval urban structures and practical opportunities for walks. The City Walls, about two miles long, the multi-level Rows and the 6 km circular route offer different highlights; Chester Zoo adds animal species, gardens and playgrounds. To plan your stay, you can first decide whether city history, a walking route, or nature and wildlife should be the main focus.

City Walls and Circular Walk

Chester City Walls are about two miles long and can be walked free of charge throughout the year. The Chester City Centre 6km Circular Walk offers another walking option: it starts at the Visitor Information Centre and follows the Shropshire Union Canal and River Dee, passes through Grosvenor Park and goes around the racecourse. The roughly two-mile stretch along the walls and the six-kilometre circular route differ in both length and course. Individual sections of the walls may be temporarily closed, so check before your trip. You should also check the route conditions for the circular walk before setting out.

Roman Amphitheatre

Chester’s Roman Amphitheatre was the largest in Britain. It is open daily throughout the year during daylight hours. For practical planning, this means fitting your visit into the daylight hours. As a Roman highlight, the amphitheatre complements the medieval urban structures with a different historical theme.

The Chester Rows

Chester is unique in Britain for its Rows. At street level, shops are located in lower storeys; above them are more shops at Row level, with homes above. This multi-level arrangement makes the Rows a distinctive urban structure: commercial premises occupy two levels, while living space is above them. Looking at the Rows, you can follow the sequence of shops and homes across several levels.

Covered Galleries in Chester

The covered galleries on the first floor date back to the Middle Ages and have been part of Chester’s history for more than 800 years. Alongside the Roman Amphitheatre, they provide another historical highlight: Roman heritage and medieval origins stand side by side as distinct periods.

Chester Zoo: Animal Species and Gardens

At Chester Zoo, visitors can discover more than 500 animal species and explore more than 130 acres. The zoo also has five different playgrounds. Its award-winning gardens showcase plants that play an important role in supporting local wildlife.

Practical Visiting Conditions

Conditions vary depending on the activity: for the City Walls, be aware that individual sections may be temporarily closed; for the Circular Walk, check the route conditions. The amphitheatre can be visited during daylight hours. These differences help you plan each visit appropriately, rather than assuming the same timing or practical requirements apply to every location.
