The Roker Seafront Circular passes Cliff Park, the white lighthouse and Roker Park, with views of Roker Pier. There are also historic sites and museum collections with very different areas of focus. You can discover Sunderland through coastal routes, early church history or culture—depending on what makes your trip especially interesting.

Roker Seafront Circular and Roker Pier

The Roker Seafront Circular begins and ends at the Bungalow Café on Pier View in Roker. This shared starting and ending point gives the circular route a clear point of reference. Along the way, you pass Cliff Park, the white lighthouse and Roker Park; you also get views of Roker Pier. The route therefore connects several named landmarks with views of the pier, without requiring another starting point for navigation.

The construction history is also part of the coastal theme: Roker Pier and Lighthouse was built between 1885 and 1903. This time span gives the structure a historical point of reference for a visit to Roker. If you choose this route, both the route itself and the history of the pier are central to the experience.

Early church history and later buildings

The early dates associated with Monkwearmouth and the Church of St Peter are close together, but refer to different details. Benedict Biscop founded the Monkwearmouth Anglo-Saxon monastery in 674. The first church at the Church of St Peter dates from 674–675. The Monkwearmouth Anglo-Saxon monastery and medieval priory is a Scheduled Monument. Taken together, these details offer a glimpse into the early history of the two named sites, without equating the foundation of the monastery with the construction of the church.

A much later historical point of reference is Hylton Castle: Sir William Hylton built it shortly before 1400. Compared with the details from the 7th century, its construction took place many centuries later. If you are interested in Sunderland’s history, early church history and a late-medieval building are therefore available as distinct topics.

The collection and Winter Gardens

The collection at Sunderland Museum & Winter Gardens comprises over 108,000 objects and is divided into five areas: fine and decorative art, history, archaeology, ethnography and natural sciences. This breadth helps you navigate a range of interests. You might consider whether you are more interested in art, historical topics, archaeology, ethnography or natural sciences; the collection is not limited to just one of these fields.

The Winter Gardens offer another perspective: their treetop walkway provides a bird’s-eye view of Mowbray Park. This makes the view of the park a focus in its own right, alongside the collection’s subject areas. If you want to include different cultural and landscape aspects in your trip, you can give these interests separate consideration when planning.

Routes, getting around and planning your visit

The Sunderland’s Historic High Streets Heritage Walk is suitable for wheelchair users and people with pushchairs. This suitability is subject to the conditions of the specific route. Take the actual route conditions into account when planning, rather than treating this as a blanket guarantee for every visit.

You can get around Sunderland easily by car, bus, train or Metro. Sunderland can be reached by air, rail, Metro, car, taxi or bus. These options give you a choice of transport; which one suits your trip depends on how you want to travel and which journeys you plan to make locally.

One important update for planning your cultural visits: the National Glass Centre permanently closed on 31 July 2026. Do not plan it as a stop on your visit. The historic sites, the collection at Sunderland Museum & Winter Gardens and the Roker route each offer a distinct focus, so you can choose according to the subjects that interest you most.
