South Shields brings together Roman heritage, exhibitions and waterside leisure. To plan your visit, it helps to consider the different highlights: Arbeia and the museums offer a focus on history, while the coast, seafront and South Marine Park reveal other sides of what the area has to offer. This lets you shape your trip around the subjects you would like to explore further.

Roman heritage and historical collections

Arbeia, South Shields Roman Fort, is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The fort guarded the main sea route to Hadrian’s Wall. Its historical function and the reconstructions on site offer two ways to understand the complex. Visitors can explore the West Gate, a barrack block and part of a late Roman courtyard house. The different reconstructed areas draw attention beyond a single building to various parts of the site.

At South Shields Museum & Art Gallery, the permanent “Changing Faces” gallery traces the history of South Tyneside from the Bronze Age to the 20th century. Its broad timespan differs from Arbeia’s Roman focus. “Treasures” offers another perspective on the collection: visitors can see objects up close that had not been on display for several years.

Exhibitions and cultural attractions

Since opening in 2016, The Word has presented exhibitions in three locations: the main exhibition space, the ground-floor exhibition area and the Caer-Urfa Pod. Those interested in exhibitions will therefore find several distinct spaces within the building.

The Customs House in South Shields brings together a cinema, theatre, music, a restaurant and an art gallery under one roof. This makes it different from a dedicated exhibition venue: its offering includes both cultural events and a restaurant.

Coast, seafront and leisure

The bathing water at Sandhaven Beach met the “Good” standard in 2024. Marsden Rock is a detached section of cliff formed by the gradual erosion of the sea. These facts offer different perspectives on the coast: the beach is associated with a specific annual rating, while Marsden Rock is described as a geological formation.

Coastal leisure options include two distinct activities: Smugglers Cove Golf is a pirate-themed 12-hole mini-golf course in the centre of the South Shields seafront. Ocean Beach Pleasure Park on the South Shields coast has free admission; operating details may vary. Check them before visiting.

Leisure at South Marine Park

A small steam train runs around South Marine Park. Visitors can hire a pedal boat on the boating lake. The park therefore offers two clearly distinct leisure activities: a train ride around the park and an activity on the water. Which one better suits your plans depends on what you would like to focus on during your stay.
