Castlederg brings together cultural history, a seasonal tradition and experiences in the countryside. Derg Parish Church and Castlederg Castle offer different perspectives on the town’s history; the Apple Fair is associated with a traditional date before Halloween. For outdoor activities, the Derg Valley Walks offer riverside walks and routes across open moorland. If you are considering a stay in Castlederg, these themes can help you decide whether architectural history, an October event or the landscape should be your focus.

Church and Castle: Two Historical Perspectives

Derg Parish Church is a Church of Ireland church on Main Street in Castlederg. It was built in 1731 on the site of an earlier church. The churchyard broadens the historical perspective: its gravestones date from the early 18th century to the present day. This site therefore brings together the history of an earlier building, the current church building and a long sequence of gravestones.

Castlederg Castle stands on the north bank of the River Derg, a little west of the town. The present castle was built by Sir John Davies between 1609 and 1622. An earlier castle previously stood on the same site, making it a multi-period castle site. The church and castle offer different ways to explore the town’s history: the church focuses on its building and gravestones, while the castle focuses on the succession of two castles on one site.

Apple Fair: A Traditional October Date

The Castlederg Apple Fair has been held for 100 years and is one of the town’s long-standing traditions. It traditionally takes place on the last Friday in October. Before Halloween, apple sellers travel from County Armagh. If the fair is the reason for your trip, check the specific date for that year in advance. This allows you to factor the seasonal event into your travel plans.

Circular Routes, Landscape and Family Activities

The Derg Valley Walks comprise a series of circular walking routes through unspoilt countryside. They include riverside walks and walks across open moorland. You can distinguish between the natural settings by their landscapes: riverside paths offer a different focus from open moorland. This provides a practical comparison when deciding which surroundings you would like to focus on during your outdoor activities.

The Derg Valley Route starts in Castlederg and has information boards. Check the status of this route before your trip.

Castle Park Play Park adds family activities to the options. It opened in Castlederg on 18 November 2024 as a public, accessible place for family activities. Its features include accessible play equipment and interactive play areas. Alongside local history and the landscape, these play areas offer a distinct focus.
