The church history of Upper Ballinderry is marked by precise dates: Ballinderry Middle Church is considered one of the finest examples of a Plantation church in Ulster; the present-day Ballinderry Parish Church was built in 1824. Stained-glass windows, paintings, tombs and memorial sites add personal dedications and remembrances to the history of the buildings. For trip planning, this offers different perspectives on the local heritage: church architecture, memorial culture and the transformation of former commercial buildings.
Churches and Their Traces Through Time
Ballinderry Middle Church, also known as “Jeremy Taylor’s Church”, is considered one of the finest examples of a Plantation church in Ulster. The present-day Ballinderry Parish Church was built in 1824 during the tenure of Rev James Stannus. These are distinct historical points of reference: Middle Church is known for its classification as a Plantation church, while Parish Church is associated with its specific year of construction. A large painting of the royal coat of arms of Charles II links the histories of the two churches: in 1859 it was moved from Middle Church to Parish Church.
The Parish Church also contains a stained-glass window erected in 1862 by Thomas Walkington of Oatland Cottage. It commemorates his parents and, in pious remembrance, his ancestor Edward Walkington, who was Bishop of Down and Connor in 1695. The dedication combines family remembrance with the memory of a named church official; the window thus adds a personal dimension to the history of the building.
The grounds of Ballinderry Middle Church offer further historical clues. They occupy a landscaped, elevated site with numerous stone and marble tombs, as well as chest tombs dating from the late 17th century to the present day. The church was extensively restored in 1902. The site also includes a lych gate, or churchyard gate, built around 1902. An earlier date is provided by the first Ordnance Survey of the Ballinderry area, from 1832, which records Middle Church. The grounds, grave types, gate and map entry reveal different aspects of the site’s history.
Memorials and Change in the Local Landscape
Ballinderry War Memorial Hall was built as a lasting tribute to the young men from the area who served in the First World War and, in some cases, lost their lives. Its memorial purpose focuses on the people of the region and their wartime experiences. The hall thus adds a distinct form of remembrance to the history of the churches and buildings.
The former uses of buildings are also part of local history: former grain stores and warehouses were converted into two commercial premises. Ballinderry China occupies the westernmost part, and Ballinderry Antiques the other. If you are planning a specific shopping visit, it is best to confirm that the businesses are currently operating beforehand.
