Crom is three miles from Newtownbutler. This makes Crom Estate worth considering when planning a stay in Newtownbutler: the estate combines natural landscapes, birdwatching, water activities and historic buildings. When choosing accommodation, you can first weigh up whether scenery, activities on the water or history should be the main focus. The options are distinct: a circular walk, a birdwatching hide, boating activities and two different fishing options.

Nature at Crom Estate

Crom Estate covers 2,000 acres of tranquil islands and ancient woodland and is one of Ireland’s most important nature reserves. At Derrymacrow Lough, there is a birdwatching hide with a ramp and viewing slit for wheelchair users. This provision applies to the hide. Among the ancient yew trees is a connected pair: one male and one female yew, with a combined circumference of 377 feet (115 m). This figure describes the pair together.

Water and activities

Rowing boats and canoes are available at Crom Estate for exploring Lough Erne. Boat hire includes an introductory briefing and maps of the estate and local attractions. As availability may change, it is advisable to enquire before your trip.

Fishing options also vary by location and type: there are fishing spots for bream, roach and perch on the shore of Upper Lough Erne. Boat fishing for pike is offered on the inland lake, Green Lough. Check availability and information about any required fishing permits before making plans.

A circular route between woodland and historic buildings

The circular walk through Crom Estate is 4.2 miles long and follows a variety of paths away from paved roads. Along the way, it passes Crom Old Castle, the boathouse, the Summer House and the ancient yew trees. This means the same route takes in both the landscape and several named historic sites. If you plan to follow this route, check trail conditions before setting out; the described terrain is not limited to paved roads.

Buildings and history

Old Crom Castle was built in the early 17th century by Scottish settler Michael Balfour. In 1689, the castle withstood two sieges by the Jacobites. Today, its ruins are an isolated monument. Crighton Tower also stands on Gad Island: a stone folly built as an observatory in the 19th century. The two structures therefore differ both in the period in which they were built and in their function.

The Battle of Newtownbutler is also part of the area’s history. It is considered the most significant defeat suffered by King James’s army up to that point. In connection with the battle, a force took up position at the end of a narrow causeway through a bog near Newtownbutler.

Plan your journey

Crom can be reached by road from Newtownbutler to Crom. The bus route between Enniskillen and Clones passes through Newtownbutler; check whether it is currently operating before you travel. This allows you to consider road travel and the bus route separately when planning.
