Portrush offers a range of coastal themes to help you plan your trip: a broad shoreline and promenade at East Strand, West Strand’s suitability for families and walkers, and the limestone cliffs and sea-carved caves at White Rocks. Nature interpretation, water sports and an experience centred on fishing broaden the options. Which of these aspects you focus on depends on whether you are looking for scenery, a beach or an active pursuit on the water.

Beaches with different features

East Strand is characterised by a broad shoreline and a promenade or boardwalk. West Strand is suitable for families and walkers. This is a practical distinction when making your choice: if you are choosing as a family or for walks, West Strand is the clearer choice; East Strand highlights a different coastal feature, with its broad shoreline and promenade.

Coastal landscape and nature themes

At White Rocks, limestone cliffs and sea-carved caves shape the coast. Compared with the broad shoreline of East Strand, the focus here is more on rock and the coastal landscape shaped by it. When planning your trip, you can therefore choose between a promenade along the shore and a coast shaped by geology.

The Portrush Coastal Zone is a centre for interpreting marine and coastal topics. Its focus is coastal wildlife and the natural and cultural heritage of Northern Ireland. It is located right next to Portrush National Nature Reserve, which was designated for its geology and fossils. The two places have different emphases: the Coastal Zone focuses on interpretation, while the Reserve was designated for its geology and fossils. Ramore Head and The Skerries ASSI also lie north of Portrush.

Water sports and an experience centred on fishing

Portrush Yacht Club offers sailing, swimming, surfing, kayaking and diving; accredited training courses are also available. The five sports listed are a separate activity focus alongside the training offer. If you would like to organise your trip around activities, you can distinguish between the water sports and an interest in training courses.

For the “Catch and Sea” experience, the trip starts at Portrush Harbour aboard the fishing boat Causeway Lass. Participants catch their own breakfast, which is then prepared by a local chef. Catching and cooking are thus part of one continuous experience. If you would like to include this experience in your plans, please check current availability beforehand.

Maritime history

Search and rescue is also part of Portrush’s maritime history. Portrush Lifeboat Station was built in 1924; its crews have received 28 awards for gallantry. The station operates an inshore lifeboat as well as an all-weather lifeboat. The building’s history and the awards provide a historical connection; the types of lifeboats add information about the station’s role.
