Wetlands, woodland and birdwatching

Walthamstow Wetlands is a 160-hectare nature reserve where rare waterbirds and birds of prey can be spotted. Special hides are provided for birdwatching. The Wetlands are less than a ten-minute walk from Tottenham Hale and Blackhorse Road Underground stations. Check the latest access information and transport connections before you travel.

Epping Forest is also accessible from various parts of Waltham Forest. Its habitats range from ancient woodland to heathland, grassland and wetlands; together, they support a diverse range of wildlife and plant life. Walthamstow Marshes, meanwhile, is a floodplain marsh with more than 400 plant and animal species, and forms part of a continuous walking and cycling route along the River Lea. These distinct natural features offer specific points of interest: birdwatching, diverse habitats and a riverside route each reveal a different aspect of the landscape.

A special feature of Epping Forest is the Brambly Hedge Trail, with 17 carved oak figures depicting characters from the Brambly Hedge books. Rowing boats can be hired at Hollow Ponds during the warmer months. Check whether seasonal boat hire is currently available before visiting.

Stories in historic buildings

The William Morris Gallery brings together an important art collection and the history of its building: it houses the world’s largest collection of works by William Morris and is located in a Georgian villa that was once the Morris family home. The Gallery offers free family trails for children. Alongside the artworks, visitors can explore the house’s former use and a family-friendly activity.

The Pumphouse Museum explores technology and transport. It is housed in a restored Victorian pumping station, originally built in 1885 and listed as a Grade II building. On display is a fully operational pair of Marshall C series steam engines. The museum also exhibits historic Underground carriages, including a 1967 Victoria line carriage.

Queen Elizabeth’s Hunting Lodge is a timber-framed building dating from 1543. Its historic kitchen offers an introduction to Tudor cooking, and a free monthly guided tour is also available to visitors. Check the latest tour schedule before your visit.

Soho Theatre Walthamstow has 960 seats for comedy, theatre, cabaret and live shows. It is housed in the Grade II*-listed former Granada Cinema, whose Spanish-Arabic auditorium has been restored. Here, a contemporary programme of performances meets a striking historic venue.

Market life and changing events

Walthamstow Market was first established in 1885. It brings together more than 500 stalls and offers international cuisine; the number of stalls may change over time. The Blackhorse Road Beer Mile offers a different experience, with breweries, taprooms and distilleries all within easy walking distance of one another. Street-food trucks, changing kitchen pop-ups, DJ nights and live events add to the offering. Individual businesses and event programmes may change.

Leyton Más adds a family-oriented carnival celebrating more than 125 years of carnival tradition in Waltham Forest. As the programme is planned annually, check the latest event dates before your trip. Together, the market, Beer Mile and carnival offer different ways to include food, nightlife and cultural events in your exploration of Waltham Forest.
