Framlingham brings together a castle with a defining episode in English history, a medieval church and a museum with a historic newspaper series. It also offers a walking trail, National Cycle Route 1 and a vineyard on the edge of town. This gives you a choice of history, activity and regional winemaking when planning your visit.
Castle Walls and English History
Framlingham Castle is part of the historical context of the 12th century and preserves the full length of its massive curtain wall. Another significant episode links the town to Mary: she was at Framlingham Castle when she received the news that Northumberland had surrendered and that she had been proclaimed England’s first reigning queen. This brings together a lasting architectural feature and a specific moment in political history. Anyone with a particular interest in the English monarchy will find this clearly defined historical connection alongside the castle itself.
St Michael’s Church
St Michael’s Church is a medieval church and is listed as a Grade I building. Craftspeople have contributed to its construction, decoration and development since the 12th century. Inside are early wall paintings and a rare organ. For private prayer, the church is normally open daily from 10 am to 4 pm. Check access information before your visit, as details may change.
Lanman Museum: Newspaper and Gold Jewellery
The Lanman Museum collection includes the complete run of the Framlingham Weekly News. The newspaper was published every Saturday from 1859 to 1938. The museum also displays medieval gold jewellery found in Framlingham. The newspaper and jewellery offer different historical perspectives: a long-running printed series and a material find from the town.
When it was revived in 2018, the long-established Framlingham Gala was a three-day weekend event.
On Foot, by Bike and by Bus
The Framlingham Town Trail is a circular route of 1.4 miles, or 2.25 kilometres. Its stated length gives you a practical basis for fitting the walk into your day. Framlingham is also on National Cycle Route 1, another useful point of reference for those choosing a destination for a cycling trip. The demand-responsive Katch Bus connects Framlingham with Wickham Market and Wickham Market railway station via Hacheston and Parham. If you plan to use this service, check the timetable and service information before travelling, as details may change.
Market and Winemaking
Framlingham’s popular market offers fresh local produce as well as goods from local craftspeople. On the edge of town is Shawsgate Vineyard, a family-run English vineyard covering 20 acres. Visitors can take a self-guided tour among the vines or book a tasting or event. Check booking arrangements and dates in advance, as these may change.
