Southend-On-Sea can be explored along two different distances. Southend Pier extends 1.33 miles into the Thames Estuary and is the longest pleasure pier in the world. Another distance relates to Southend’s own coastal cycle route: it is around six miles long and runs from Chalkwell Beach to Shoebury East Beach. One measurement describes a pier, the other a cycle route with named endpoints. If you want to plan around the route, check the route details before setting off.

Art Collections and Museum History

Southend Central Museum is housed in a Grade II listed building. It reopened as a museum in 1981. This means the site brings together a history as a building and a clearly dated reopening as a museum.

The permanent collection at Beecroft Art Gallery comprises more than 2,000 works, ranging from 17th-century Dutch paintings to contemporary works. Artists represented include Molenaer, Ruisdael, Berchem, Rossetti, Constable and Edward Lear. Temporary exhibitions and rotating displays from the permanent collection complement the lasting collection with a changing programme. If you are interested in a particular exhibition, check what is currently on display before visiting.

Southchurch Hall: Construction and Visible Traces

Southchurch Hall is a medieval Grade I listed building with a moat in Southend-On-Sea. The present building was constructed around 1321 to 1364; the Great Hall is still presented in its 14th-century form. The date therefore remains an approximate period, not a single year of construction. The moat is also part of the site’s character: its outline is still visible.

Market, Green Spaces and Experiences

The general outdoor market on Southend High Street takes place on Thursdays and Saturdays from 09:00 to 17:00. Depending on what is available, you may find fresh bread, fresh fish, so-called “free-from” foods, confectionery and hot food. The selection may vary. The set market days and the range of possible offerings provide both a practical guide for planning and an idea of the kinds of food you may find there.

Green spaces are also part of the picture: as of 2026, Southend has nine parks and green spaces with Green Flag Awards. This number may change. Adventure Island is a theme park with free entry and more than 40 rides and attractions; the offering may change. If you are planning to visit specific attractions, check the latest information before your visit.

Another way to explore the night sky is through Southend Planetarium, which offers live talks exploring the night sky. The programme and talk times may change. Check the current schedule if you want to include a talk in your plans.

Getting Around in Summer

In summer, frequent c2c and Greater Anglia train services, along with local bus routes, provide access to Southend’s beaches, shopping areas, parks and attractions. The summer reference is important for this guidance; these services should not be taken as a year-round statement. As timetables may change, check the times that apply to your visit before travelling.
