Yelverton offers several ways to enjoy a stay that combines exercise, nature and local history. There are four circular walks in the area around the villages of Alpington and Yelverton, as well as opportunities for birdwatching in different settings and two listed buildings. When planning your visit, it is worth choosing your main focus first: would you like to spend more time walking, watching birds or exploring local history? These interests can be combined without needing to follow a fixed daily itinerary.
Circular walks in the Alpington and Yelverton area
The four circular walks start at the centrally located village hall in the Alpington and Yelverton area. They are connected and can be combined into longer walks. As circular routes, they lead back to their respective starting points. You can stick to one loop or join several routes if you are planning a longer walk. The Wheel of Fortune pub is on the red Route C.
On some routes from the decades-old Giant Strides walking guide, the paths may be overgrown or less usable. Allow for possible detours or turning back on these routes.
Birdwatching and the rural landscape
Alpington and Yelverton are surrounded by farmland and have numerous public footpaths. Birdwatching opportunities can be found in gardens, in the churchyard, on the playing fields and in the surrounding farmland. The locations range from village areas to open fields. These offer different ways to experience the surroundings: walking along the paths or watching birds in a variety of places. You can plan this nature-focused activity alongside the circular walks.
Listed buildings and remembrance
The Church of St Mary is a Grade I listed building; Yelverton Hall is Grade II. The churchyard at St Mary’s Church Yelverton is also home to a registered Commonwealth War Graves site containing two First World War casualties. This brings together different aspects of local history: listed architecture and a specific place of remembrance. The buildings and the site offer two different points of interest if you are interested in architectural history or remembrance of the fallen.
The village hall as an event venue
The Alpington with Yelverton Village Hall can be hired for parties, clubs and other social events. There is a large car park in front of and behind the building. The hall has step-free access for people with disabilities. This information relates to the hall itself and its use as an event venue; it is also the starting point for the four circular walks.
The hall also has a recently refurbished children’s play area with swings, a slide, a climbing frame and a basketball hoop. As information about the play area may change, it is advisable to check its current condition before visiting.
