Beneath the Victorian decoration of Knebworth House is a red-brick Tudor house. The gardens feature a maze, mature trees and a Dinosaur Trail. There is also an exhibition about the Lytton family, a church with origins dating back to around 1150, and described circular walks. Knebworth therefore offers several different focuses for planning your trip—from architecture and garden history to interactive attractions.
Knebworth House and Gardens
Beneath its later Victorian decoration, Knebworth House includes a red-brick Tudor house. Its building history thus combines an older structure with a later layer of design. At the same time, the house offers insight into 500 years of British history, shaped by generations of the Lytton family. The architecture and family history offer two different perspectives on the house: one focuses on its building phases, the other on the historical context shaped by generations of the Lyttons.
Visitors can also include the Victorian Watchman's Tower in their visit: it can be climbed with a ticket for the house, park and gardens. If you plan to visit the tower, bear this ticket requirement in mind.
Knebworth Gardens cover 28 acres. They include a maze, colourful flower borders, mature trees and a wilderness area with a Dinosaur Trail. The gardens therefore offer a distinct focus alongside the house's architecture.
The present-day design of Knebworth Gardens dates largely from the Edwardian era. The herb garden provides a specific point of reference: it was laid out in 1982 based on a 1907 design by Gertrude Jekyll. This distinguishes the period that shaped most of the gardens' current design from the earlier design for this particular garden area.
Dinosaur Trail and Adventure Playground
The Dinosaur Trail is in the wilderness area. Information boards accompany the route, along with dinosaur sounds, life-size footprints to feel and prehistoric plants. The trail offers several ways to engage with the subject: reading, listening, touching and looking at plants. For visitors who enjoy different sensory elements alongside information, this combination offers a distinct feature of the garden areas.
The Adventure Playground, which includes Fort Knebworth, offers a different activity. Its facilities include Astro and Drop slides, a zip line, interactive water play and climbing equipment. Unlike the Dinosaur Trail, the focus here is on getting active on the play equipment. As individual pieces of equipment may be closed for safety reasons, check their current status before your visit.
Family History and Church Architecture
The exhibition “The Lytton Family in India” features unique memorabilia and photographs from the family's journeys to India in the 1870s and 1920s. These two periods provide a clear framework for the subject; the exhibition combines photographic and material mementos with the journeys to India. It adds a distinct cultural focus to the story of the Lytton family.
At St Mary and St Thomas, the origins of the chancel and nave date back to around 1150. These parts of the church offer an older architectural perspective than the Tudor and Victorian features of the house and Watchman's Tower. When considering Knebworth's historical themes, you can thus distinguish between building history, family history and church architecture.
Circular Walks with a Date Reference
The “Knebworth Parish Walks” leaflet, produced in 2018 and last updated in 2021, describes three circular walks. According to the description, Circular Walk 1 starts at the Lytton Arms and is 4.25 miles long. If you are planning a walk today, check the current route and conditions in advance. This keeps the specific distance linked to its date reference and avoids confusing it with a statement about current trail conditions.
