The medieval moated site on the eastern edge, St Peter’s with its 13th-century features, and the wooded banks along Ermine Street reveal different sides of Papworth Everard. Planning details also include designated woodland, open spaces and a bus service to Cambridge. If you are looking for accommodation, you can weigh up whether local history, the landscape or the connection to the city should be the focus of your stay.
Medieval traces
The medieval moated site lies 140 metres east of Papworth Hall, on the eastern edge of Papworth Everard. It is considered to be the site of the manor house of Papworth Everard. Its island is roughly semicircular and about 50 metres in diameter.
The parish church of St Peter adds medieval architecture to the archaeological history. Its chancel walls and nave feature elements dating from the 13th century; inside is a font from the same period. The chancel and nave are parts of the church building, while the font is part of its furnishings. At St Peter’s, therefore, structural elements of the church and an item of furnishing represent different aspects of its architecture.
Woodland landscape and Ermine Street
Ermine Street was a Roman military road between London and York, built in the 1st century AD. In Papworth Everard, high, wooded banks on both sides of the road are a distinctive feature, giving it a distinctly rural character. Ermine Street thus brings together a historic route and a landscape: its Roman function provides a historical and regional context, while the banks shape its local appearance.
Papworth Wood is an 8.7-hectare woodland designated as a Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI). It is among the oldest secondary woodlands in Cambridgeshire. At Barons Wood, the Papworth Trust planted 100 trees of native species. The woodlands have different distinguishing features: Papworth Wood is described by its area and woodland classification, while Barons Wood is notable for a specific planting.
