Church, Architecture and Aviation History
St Mary's in Henlow dates from the early 12th century. Its architecture includes features from this and every subsequent period, as well as numerous family monuments and a rare pillar piscina. The church is open to visitors, where possible, Monday to Thursday from 10 am to 4 pm. Check access before your visit.
Henlow Grange preserves decorative interiors. These include the Peacock Room, dating from the late 19th century, with hand-painted Chinese wallpaper. The war memorial in Henlow church consists of a stone plaque fixed to the wall.
The history of RAF Henlow spans a range of roles and periods. Until 10 May 1918, the depot manufactured a limited number of Bristol Fighters and de Havilland aircraft. During the Battle of Britain, damaged Hurricanes were repaired at RAF Henlow, making an indirect contribution. After the Second World War, RAF Henlow developed a role in calibrating radio equipment and developing signals.
The RAF Signals Museum tells the story of RAF signals technology. Other exhibits offer insights into equipment developed during the First World War and in the 1920s and 1930s. Alongside aircraft repair, technological developments and signals technology are presented as subjects in their own right.

Nearby is Henlow Common and Langford Meadows, a 13-hectare local nature reserve with wet grassland and scrubland beside the River Ivel. Kingfishers, terns, mute swans and otters have been recorded in the area. A circular trail follows the riverbank. Paths can become muddy after rain.
A walking trail near Henlow runs for about a kilometre along a winding path before crossing a footbridge over the River Hiz. Another trail leads into Old Moat Nature Reserve. Check access and path conditions there in advance.
The two trail descriptions use different reference points: one gives an approximate distance and mentions a bridge, while the other names a nature reserve as its destination. You can use this to decide whether an approximate distance or a named destination is more helpful when choosing a trail.
