Großheringen brings together two different travel interests: the history of the covered Hausbrücke bridge and the Burgenland paddling tour along the Saale to Naumburg. Wine experiences in Kaatschen, in the associated municipality, add another focus. This gives you the choice of architectural and transport history, a river route or winegrowing.

Hausbrücke and Saale Paddling Tour

Built in 1753, the covered Hausbrücke bridge, also known as the Salzbrücke, once belonged to Saxe-Meiningen. At one time, it was the only crossing over the Ilm and connected the old salt road with the Saalfeld region. Its history therefore brings together two aspects: its former territorial affiliation and its role as a crossing and connection. This offers a different perspective from a route focused primarily on the landscape.

The Burgenland paddling tour runs from Großheringen to Naumburg along the Saale. This stretch of the Saale passes steeply rising slopes, rock formations, vineyards and castles. The endpoints give the tour a clear direction, while the landscape features describe its character. Both the route and the surroundings along the way are useful points of reference when making your choice.

Winegrowing in the associated municipality

Near Kaatschen, in the associated municipality, there is a wine trail about 2.5 kilometers long, marked with information signs. Check current conditions before setting out. The approximate distance and trail markers give you specific guidance for planning, without indicating how difficult the route is.

A guided wine walk around the wine village of Kaatschen lasts about 35 minutes. It includes a glass of wine from the Zahn winery and information about the Saale-Unstrut region, the Thuringian Zahn winery and vineyard work. At least ten people are required, and advance booking is necessary. The offer is available until December 20, 2026. Bear the group size and advance booking requirement in mind if you include this activity in your plans.

The Weinbergfest has been celebrated every year since 2000 on the first weekend in September at Kaatschener Dachsberg. If you choose the festival as the occasion for a trip, check that year's program in advance. The recurring festival date and the guided wine walk offer different ways to experience the wine village and vineyard work: one as a festival, the other as a guided activity with a set duration and minimum group size.

More topics in the wider Weimarer Land destination

The wider Weimarer Land destination offers more hiking and cultural themes. The Thuringian Three Towers Trail is a circular hiking route through the protected landscape of the Central Ilm Valley in southern Weimarer Land. It connects Paulinenturm near Bad Berka, Hainturm in Belvederer Forst near Weimar, and Carolinenturm near Blankenhain. The Goethe Adventure Trail follows Goethe's route to Charlotte von Stein and includes twelve nature and culture experience stops. The two trails therefore differ in focus: a circular route and three towers on the one hand, and literary connections and experience stops on the other.

The cultural attractions also offer different focuses. The GlockenStadtMuseum Apolda is devoted to the cultural history of bells and the region's textile industry. The Thuringian Open-Air Museum Hohenfelden features more than 40 historic buildings dating from the 16th to the 20th century. Since 1995, Kunsthaus Apolda Avantgarde has hosted exhibitions by international and regional artists. Its program also includes talks, auctions, book readings and film screenings; check current opening hours and event dates before visiting.

The cycle routes between Weimar, Apolda and Bad Sulza are suitable for multi-day cycling trips, combining experiences in nature, cultural history and regional cuisine. Check current route conditions before setting off. The wider Weimarer Land therefore also offers cycling alongside hiking and cultural attractions; these provide a separate way to plan a trip and are not the same as the local attractions in Großheringen.
