Neuhaus-Schierschnitz can be explored through two themes: the history of the castle and palace, and GeoPaths with different route characteristics. This mix helps you choose the focus of your trip: cultural and historical exploration, or time on walking and cycling trails.
Castle History and Architectural Styles
In the wider destination of Föritztal, the history of Neuhaus Castle dates back to the 13th century, when it was built as a relatively modest structure. The castle in Neuhaus-Schierschnitz was first mentioned in an official document in 1315; it has been a ruin since 1634. In the wider destination of Föritztal, Neuhaus Palace was also remodelled in the Neo-Renaissance style by its owner at the time, Hermann von Walther, between 1902 and 1904. The local history museum is housed in a half-timbered building with a slate roof and mansard roof. The town’s history therefore highlights different details: historical developments at the castle and palace, and architectural style at the museum.
GeoPaths with Different Route Profiles
The Sand Extraction GeoPath is 6.5 kilometres long. It passes through the Biene woodland, offers a view of Schottenberg, and returns to the town hall car park through a meadow valley via the district of Mark. Walkers and cyclists will find natural, sandy stretches along the route through the Biene’s pine and spruce forests.
The path to Gessendorf Spring branches off from the Coal GeoPath at the palace. It leads through the district of Gessendorf into the Green Belt and on to Gessendorf Spring, a popular destination for walkers and cyclists. In the wider destination of Föritztal, the Coal GeoPath is also suitable for cyclists, with just a few exceptions. The Sand Extraction GeoPath has a specified length; the Coal GeoPath’s suitability for cycling, with only a few exceptions, is a useful distinction when planning your day.
More Leisure Activities
Neuhaus-Schierschnitz outdoor swimming pool is located right by the B89 and is surrounded by trees. Check the current opening hours before visiting, as seasonal operating details can change. Neuhaus-Schierschnitz also has a skate park and a local history room. Along with the local history museum, these give you a choice of both cultural and historical attractions and other leisure spots in town.
Föritztal as the Regional Setting
Föritztal is the wider regional setting for Neuhaus-Schierschnitz and is considered a transition area where southern Thuringia and Upper Franconia blend seamlessly into one another. At the observatory in Rotheul, visitors can use telescopes to observe, among other things, Saturn’s rings, Jupiter’s cloud bands and moons, star clusters, nebulae and distant galaxies. Advance arrangements are required for guided tours and observing sessions.
The history of Judenbach is also part of the regional picture of Föritztal: St. Niklas Chapel stood there before the end of the 14th century; in 1455 it was expanded into a church. Judenbach Library offers more than 700 books, DVDs and computer games free of charge. As collection and service details can change, check the latest information if you plan to visit the library.
