Langewiesen combines a clearly defined hiking option with several ways to explore the town’s history and technological heritage. The 13.9 km hiking trail leads around the town, passing the KulturFabrik and the tree trail, among other places, and offers panoramic views of the town and the ridges of the Thuringian Forest. The starting point and finish are at the Heinse-Haus in the town centre. If you like to plan your stay around a route and specific places of interest, you’ll find a clear focus here.
Hiking and historic stops
The approximately 5 km historic town trail offers a different focus. It runs through the town, passing historic buildings and sites of former structures documented in historical records. Information boards provide details about their history. While the hiking trail includes panoramic views and the tree trail, the town trail focuses on former structures and their history.
You can choose between the routes according to your interests: the longer trail goes around Langewiesen, while the town trail passes through it. Both provide a clear framework for a stay that combines physical activity with insights into the town’s history.
Exhibitions on technology, porcelain and photography
The Heinse-Haus has two exhibitions with different focuses. One small exhibition covers the more than 100-year tradition of manufacturing thermometers and glass apparatus in Langewiesen. The permanent exhibition is dedicated to the history of the Oscar Schlegelmilch porcelain factory and displays examples of its ornamental and everyday porcelain. The subjects offer different perspectives: one on a manufacturing tradition, the other on the history of a porcelain factory and its actual products.
The exhibition on Wilhelm Höpflinger focuses on an individual and his work. On display are a ball-grinding machine, various ball bearings and tools he used in his work; the exhibition also provides information about his biography and achievements. Here, the focus is not only on a branch of manufacturing, but also on one person’s working life.
The KulturFabrik complements these subjects with a photography museum that traces the origins of photography. Together, they offer a range of cultural themes: technical tools and biography, the manufacture of thermometers and glass apparatus, porcelain, and the history of photography. If you plan your trip around particular interests, these themes can help you choose what to focus on.
Weekly market and seasonal markets
A regular event in town is the weekly market, held every Wednesday in Langewiesen’s market square. The vendors’ offerings may vary. There is also an annual Easter market and Christmas market, each with an accompanying programme and numerous craftspeople and vendors. So, alongside the regular weekly market, there are two seasonal events. For specific plans, it is advisable to check the latest event dates.
More to explore in the wider Ilmenau destination
The wider Ilmenau destination offers further outdoor activities. Kickelhahn, Ilmenau’s local mountain, is 861 metres high; its 21-metre observation tower is one of the town’s landmarks. The 20 km Goethe Hiking Trail links places associated with Goethe from Ilmenau to Stützerbach. Compared with the 13.9 km hiking trail around Langewiesen, it is longer and connects different places.
Three different trails at the Lindenberg Trail Park invite you to go mountain biking. As facilities may change, check current local information before riding. The Ilmtal Cycle Route is also presented as a cycling option in connection with Ilmenau. In winter, numerous ski trails and winter hiking trails run from Ilmenau to the Rennsteig, as well as from Auerhahn to Kickelhahn. Snow and trail conditions vary, and trail availability is not guaranteed.
