The Ilmtal Cycle Route, hiking trails and the history of individual villages offer different ways to experience a stay in Ilmtal. Dienstedt Cave is nearby; local history and brewing traditions are associated with places such as Singen, Dörnfeld and Kleinhettstedt.

Cycling, Hiking and the Ilm Landscape

The Ilmtal Cycle Route runs through large parts of the former municipality of Ilmtal. Several hiking trails add to the options in the area, and Dörnfeld is a suitable starting point for hikes. From Singener Berg, you can enjoy wide-ranging views across Thuringia. This offers different perspectives on the landscape: the cycle route, hiking trails and a viewpoint with far-reaching views.

The Ilm flows through Dörnfeld; its trout population makes it a fishing spot there. During the spring snowmelt and after prolonged heavy rain, the river can become a fast-flowing torrent. If you plan to fish, check access and the applicable rules in advance.

Dienstedt Karst Cave: Geology and Visiting Season

The Dienstedt Karst Cave is located near the destination, on the left-hand valley slope of the Ilm and directly on the Ilmtal Cycle Route. The small cave system was formed by erosion caused by the ancient Ilm; this process shaped flow formations in the Muschelkalk limestone. The cave therefore offers a different perspective on the landscape from the open valley.

The cave can be visited each year from 1 May to 30 September. It is closed for the rest of the year to protect the bats. The Dorf- und Heimatverein Dienstedt & Oesteröda e. V. organises cave open days and private tours at the cave. There are also tours for school classes and kindergarten groups. The limited visiting season is therefore important if you want to include the cave in your travel plans.

Village History and Brewing Traditions

Singen is home to the Baroque Church of St. Nicolaus, built in 1745 after its predecessor was demolished. Also in Singen, the Singer Brewery continues to brew beer using traditional methods and is considered the smallest brewery in Thuringia. These two stories represent different aspects of the village: an 18th-century building and a continuing brewing tradition.

Dörnfeld can be explored through two further stories of its buildings. The community hall, built in 1905, is a typical example of village hall architecture of the period and is a defining feature of the village. A new church had already been built there in 1902. The people of Dörnfeld completed its restoration through considerable community effort around the 100th anniversary of its construction.

Kleinhettstedt is home to the Kunst- und Senfmühle (Art and Mustard Mill), whose history dates back to a grist mill from the 16th century. It has become a popular visitor attraction. Together with the buildings in Singen and Dörnfeld, the mill shows how varied the historical highlights of the individual villages are.

Stadtilm as a Separate Highlight

Stadtilm has further cultural attractions. The Methfessel monument stands in Stadtilm’s market square: an obelisk commemorates the composer Albert Methfessel, who was born in Stadtilm. The Eckoldt Fountain was reinstalled in 2008 and is located in the southern half of the square. At around 10,170 m², the market square is considered the largest in Thuringia. The tower vault of Stadtkirche St. Marien contains remains of Late Romanesque wall paintings, which have been classified as a monument of national importance.

Stadtilm also has a dedicated starting point for outdoor activities: the approximately 1 km-long nature trail on Buchberg passes information boards about native animal species and trees, as well as a climbing net, a long-jump pit and a sound installation. E-bikes can be charged at a charging station in the market square; check that it is currently working before relying on it. Stadtilm’s outdoor swimming pool has a snack bar, a children’s playground and sunbathing areas. Check the latest local information about these facilities before visiting.
