Brattendorf lies between Priemäusel and Süßberg, right in the middle of the municipality of Auengrund. The local description combines this geographical setting with its own church history and an early documentary reference. For nature trails and other cultural topics, it is also worth exploring the wider Auengrund travel destination.
Brattendorf: Location and History
Brattendorf was first mentioned in a document in 1317 in the “Saalbuch,” a register of the Counts of Henneberg. The village got its own church in 1928, making the Protestant parish independent. The dates mark different milestones: first the village’s written mention, and later its ecclesiastical independence.
The Brattendorf Kirmes festival took place from August 22 to 26, 2024; it was organized by Heimatverein Brattendorf e. V.
Nature and Culture in the Wider Auengrund Travel Destination
In the wider Auengrund travel destination, unspoiled hiking trails through extensive forest areas invite you to hike and cycle. The 7.5 km “Crocker Kesseltal” nature park trail is a specific hiking option and runs around Crock. The general opportunities for hiking and cycling and a single route with a set distance meet different planning needs: you can choose an activity first or focus on the specific route.
The route climbs and descends steadily over around 200 metres of elevation through a varied natural landscape on the southern slope of the Thuringian Forest. When planning, take into account both the 7.5 km distance and the elevation profile, and check current trail conditions before setting out.
In the wider Auengrund travel destination, Wiedersbach lies in the valley of the stream of the same name, is surrounded by mountains and is located in the Hildburghäuser Wald landscape conservation area. The Elsterbachtal and Dinkelshaak nature reserves, the Wiedersbacher moors and the Ratscher Reservoir surround the village. The valley, mountains and protected areas thus complement the forest trails with a different landscape perspective.
The cultural history of the wider Auengrund area is also tied to specific places: the church tower in Wiedersbach dates back to 1601. A landwehr was built in the Poppenwind district, formerly also known as “Lampr.” The church tower links two points in time: 1601 marks its historical origins, while its renovation in 2009 was a later structural milestone. By comparison, 1317 and 1928 in Brattendorf mark different milestones: the first documentary mention and the independence of the Protestant parish. This makes it possible to distinguish the timelines of the buildings and the villages.
In the 1970s, Crock associations took the initiative to build a swimming pool and an open-air theatre, which offered cultural and leisure activities at the time. Schwarzbach has a karting track described as the largest outdoor karting track in southern Thuringia.
