Tambach-Dietharz is a state-recognized health resort. The Old Tambach Reservoir lies directly on the southern edge of the town in the Apfelstädter Grund; a circular trail about nine kilometers long runs along its shore. There are also trails through forests and nature, cycling options, seasonal activities and a distinctive local history.
Reservoir and guided tours
The roughly nine-kilometer circular route along the shore is an activity in its own right when planning a day out. Guided tours at the Old Tambach Reservoir take place every Sunday from May to October. Group tours can be arranged by contacting the Tourist Information Office in advance. If you plan to join a tour, check the latest dates before your trip; advance inquiries are required for groups.
Forest trails and natural monuments
As an alternative route, the Willi Matthias Nature Park educational trail leads from the Spittergrund through the Tambach Forest to the Tammichgrund. The Steinerne Tor, a natural monument in Tambach-Dietharz, is also located in the Mittelwassergund hiking area. The human-height Steinerne Tor is considered a popular destination and an impressive photo opportunity. These named natural attractions offer different experiences: an educational trail through several landscape areas and a distinctive natural monument that serves as a specific landmark.
Cycling, climbing and winter activities
Tambach-Dietharz has the Apfelstädt Cycle Route, the Rennsteig Cycle Route and mountain bike tours. In the surrounding area, the striking Falkenstein sandstone crag has more than 100 climbing routes and reaches a height of up to 96 meters. This means that the town's named cycling options are complemented by a climbing opportunity nearby.
For winter travel plans, Tambach-Dietharz offers more than 25 kilometers of groomed cross-country ski trails. Their seasonal availability may vary depending on snow conditions. Another local feature is the Tambach-Dietharz forest swimming pool, which is supplied daily with fresh water from the Spitter.
Church, mysticism and craftsmanship
The Luther Church was built around 1350 and rebuilt in a modified form after two major fires. Martin Luther visited the church at the end of February 1537, when he stopped in town on his way back from Schmalkalden. Here, architectural history meets a specific, historically dated event.
Meister Eckhart was born in Tambach-Dietharz around 1260. His theological writings and sermons had a lasting influence on Christian mysticism. The Technical Museum Sawmill is a preserved historic sawmill; its history dates back to 1645. These three subjects highlight different aspects: church architecture, Christian mysticism and the history of sawmilling.
Getting there and planning your hotel stay
Buses on route 851 run regularly from Gotha railway station to Tambach-Dietharz. Check the current timetable before your journey. If you are planning an overnight hotel stay, it is best to choose your travel date based on your interests: guided tours at the reservoir take place on Sundays from May to October, while the availability of cross-country ski trails depends on snow conditions. Take these differing seasonal schedules into account when planning your stay.
