Kerspleben’s local history is reflected in its church architecture, baking tradition and a small monument whose upper inscription now shows only the letter “T”. The landscape is part of this story too: the stream marked the old village’s natural eastern and southern boundary, while protected landscape features are found along the northern ridge.
Church of the Holy Spirit: Architecture and History
The 52-metre-high bell and signal tower of the Church of the Holy Spirit dates from 1456. With its slender structure and pointed spire, it is a landmark of Kerspleben. In addition to its ecclesiastical function, the tower was used to monitor the Via Regia trade route—a reference to its historical role, not a present-day route.
The church interior also offers its own art-historical highlight. Its unified design makes it one of the most beautiful Baroque church interiors in Thuringia. It also features a Late Gothic winged altarpiece with 15 lindenwood figures dating from 1490. The Baroque interior and Late Gothic altarpiece thus offer different perspectives on the church’s furnishings.
Local History Museum and French Cross
The Kerspleben Local History Museum was opened in 2004 by the Kerspleben Local History and Historical Society to mark the village’s 900th anniversary. One of its rooms houses the original, fully assembled old Kerspleben bakery oven of the Reichenbach bakers, later owned by Wunderlich. The oven gives local baking history a tangible place alongside the history of the society and the village.
Check directly with the museum in advance to find out whether you need to arrange a time for your visit. This will help you plan according to any stated requirements.
Another local historical feature is the small monument in the area known as “Beim Kreuzchen”. It was first called “Kurzes Kreuz” (“Short Cross”) and later “Franzosenkreuz” (“French Cross”). Only the letter “T” remains legible in its upper inscription. Its changing names and surviving inscription give the monument a distinctive character alongside the village’s larger buildings.
Landscape Features in Kerspleben
The stream formed the natural eastern and southern boundary of the old village. This is a historical feature of the village that differs from the landscape features found today along the northern ridge. These include protected landscape areas, primarily dry habitats and traditional orchard meadows. Taken together, these details offer two distinct perspectives on Kerspleben: the village’s former boundary and the protected habitats along the ridge.
Erfurt as the Wider Travel Destination
The wider travel destination of Erfurt offers further cultural highlights. The UNESCO World Heritage Site Jewish-Medieval Heritage is located in the heart of Erfurt’s Old Town and includes the Old Synagogue, the mikveh and the Stone House. These are among the rare and exceptionally well-preserved examples of Jewish buildings in Central Europe.
Erfurt’s churches also offer several architectural highlights: St Mary’s Cathedral has a High Gothic choir, a Romanesque tower area and a Late Gothic west hall. St Severi’s Church is a five-aisled Gothic hall church and served as the collegiate church of a community of canons from the 12th century onwards. The Krämerbrücke, meanwhile, is one of Erfurt’s landmarks and Europe’s longest continuously built-up and inhabited bridge.
For a garden-focused visit, egapark Erfurt features the Danakil Desert and Jungle House, themed gardens, the Knowledge Forest and the German Horticultural Museum. Its ornamental flowerbed, covering 6,000 m², is the largest in Europe. The park is also home to Thuringia’s largest playground, covering an area of 35,000 m².
When looking for a holiday apartment, it helps to distinguish between the different highlights: Kerspleben offers local history, church architecture and landscape features, while the wider destination of Erfurt adds Old Town, architectural and garden attractions. Focus your search on the themes you want to shape your stay.
