Discover Schmölln through two distinctive themes: its button-making history and the Sprotte Water Adventure Trail. One leads into the town’s industrial past; the other combines interactive stops with a nine-kilometre route between Posterstein Castle and Schmölln. The town also offers historic buildings, the TATAMI leisure pool, and several cycling routes. You can tailor your visit to your interests, balancing culture, exercise, and family activities as you choose.
Button-Making History and the Townscape
The Knopf- und Regionalmuseum Schmölln (Button and Regional Museum) focuses on the eventful history of Schmölln’s button-making industry. Buttons made from tagua nuts played a special role. The museum displays the raw materials used in production, various tools, and historic machinery—concrete insights into materials and equipment complement the overview of local industrial history. The Knopfweg (Button Trail) was once home to around 18 small and large button factories. The former distribution of these businesses also makes button-making a visible part of the town’s history.
The museum offers an audio guide for families and children, as well as workshops for children and young people. Guided tours of the permanent exhibition are available by appointment. If you would like to arrange a tour or workshop, book ahead and ask about the audio guide’s current availability.
Schmölln’s notable buildings include St. Nikolai Church, built in the 15th century, and the Ernst-Agnes Tower. The iron observation tower is 30 metres high and stands on the highest point of the Pfefferberg hill above Schmölln. The marketplace is also noteworthy: it is one of the largest marketplaces in Central Germany.
Water Activities: The Sprotte Trail and TATAMI
The Sprotte Water Adventure Trail runs along the Sprotte River between Posterstein and Schmölln. The entire nine-kilometre route from Posterstein Castle to Schmölln passes twelve interactive stops and activities. These include a mill-themed playground, bridges and fords, the Weidendorf, and a Kneipp trail. Younger visitors in particular are invited to play and explore here. The route has only gentle inclines and is especially suitable for families. As some installations may be updated, check the latest route information before setting out.
Another option for leisure and relaxation is the TATAMI leisure pool in Schmölln. It has 400 m² of water surface, and the swimming pool is 25 metres long. There is also a Japanese-style sauna area with several themed saunas and a steam bath. Alongside the activity-focused trail, the town therefore offers a pool and sauna as distinct options.
Cycling Routes of Different Lengths
A cycling tour around Schmölln, especially recommended for families, starts in the town centre and covers about 35 kilometres. The cycling tour through the Altenburg Fruit Region is longer, at about 65 kilometres, and Schmölln is one of its stops. The popular Thuringian Cities Route also passes through Schmölln. You can compare the routes by their stated lengths and individual itineraries; no journey times are provided.
Other destinations within the municipality
Schmölln’s districts also offer places of interest with their own historical significance. Lumpzig is home to the post mill built in 1732. It is the last surviving post mill in the Altenburg region and one of the two oldest post mills in Thuringia. The mill also hosts several events throughout the year, including the Lumpzig Post Mill Festival. If you are travelling for a festival, check the event date in advance.
In the district of Altkirchen, the village museum has five exhibition rooms containing more than 2,000 exhibits across about 300 m² of exhibition space. Lumpzig and Altkirchen are therefore destinations within the municipality of Schmölln. When choosing where to go, it is useful to distinguish between attractions in the town and those in its districts, as well as between museums, buildings, water activities, and cycling routes.
