Tarp offers several distinct reasons to stay: walking trails along the Treene, the Boulder Garden, Antje Mill and the leisure pool. Each destination has a different focus. When choosing, you can distinguish between a circular trail with river and owl motifs, a route with a viewpoint and river crossing, and independent cultural and leisure attractions. Check local trail conditions and the leisure pool’s current features before visiting.
Trails along the Treene and in the Treene Valley
The Owl Trail in Tarp is a permanent circular route that you can join at any point. It is freely accessible; temporary local restrictions are possible. The route follows the Treene to the Behm Hut and passes carved owl sculptures. Before setting out, it is advisable to check the trail details and local conditions, as trail conditions can change. The river, circular route and owl motifs give this trail its distinctive character.
The Church and Viewpoint Tour has a different focus: it crosses the Treene via the Fischer Bridge and offers views of the wet meadows in the Treene Valley, including a stork’s nest. White Park cattle graze in the wet meadows along this route. The Treene viewpoint offers views of the river and surrounding nature. Forests, meadows and lakes are also part of the landscape in the Treene Valley. This makes the differences between the trails clear: the Owl Trail is a circular route to the Behm Hut, while the Church and Viewpoint Tour crosses the river and offers views of the wet meadows.
Boulder Garden, Mill and Leisure Pool
The freely accessible Tarp Boulder Garden displays around 70 erratic boulders. Information explains their material, origin and transportation by glaciers. It also features reconstructed archaeological structures: a stone circle, a burial mound with a tree-trunk coffin, and a chamber-grave complex. Geological themes and reconstructed archaeological forms are presented in the same garden. The information about the boulders and the different structures each have their own focus.
Antje Mill is a named attraction in Tarp, located on Stapelholmer Weg. It is a specific landmark alongside the trails and the Boulder Garden. Tarp Leisure Pool brings together swimming and play facilities: it has a 50-metre pool, diving platforms at 1, 3 and 5 metres, two water slides, a toddlers’ area with water features, and a playground. Free parking is available at the leisure pool. Check the current facilities and parking rules before your visit.
Schleswig-Flensburg as the wider setting
The wider travel destination of Schleswig-Flensburg offers further historical and landscape highlights. Haithabu and the Danevirke have been UNESCO World Heritage Sites since June 2018; more than 25 kilometres of the Danevirke rampart still remain. The Idstedt Memorial and Museum provides information about German-Danish history surrounding the uprising of 1848 and the Battle of Idstedt. Guided nature tours are offered in Schlei Nature Park; the Viking-Frisian Way, the Ox Road and 15 signposted themed cycling routes also run through the park.
