Niesgrau is located right on Gelting Bay. Three different themes can guide your choice of stay: the beach at Ohrfeldhaff, with its very large shallow-water area; walking and riding trails; and the marina at Gelting-Mole. This mix gives you a practical starting point when looking for accommodation in Niesgrau: decide whether the coast, getting active on the trails, or the harbour area is your priority.
Beach, harbour and trails
Ohrfeldhaff beach has a very large shallow-water area. Gelting-Mole in Niesgrau is home to a marina with 450 berths for motorboats and sailing boats. There are cafés and restaurants in the coastal area. If dining out is an essential part of your day, check current opening hours in advance; marina occupancy and businesses can change over time.
Niesgrau’s well-developed network of walking and riding trails offers opportunities for both walking and riding. This means you can choose trails as a focus in their own right, as well as spending time on the bay. Those who enjoy walking will have a different focus from those who want to ride.
More nature experiences in the wider Schleswig-Flensburg destination
In the wider Schleswig-Flensburg destination, Geltinger Birk offers another perspective on the landscape. With a total area of 773 hectares, it is the largest nature reserve in the Schleswig-Flensburg district. It has well-developed trails and guided walks that share information about the flora and fauna. This offers two distinct ways to experience nature: trails for exploring independently and guided walks with nature interpretation.
More than 130 bird species can be observed on Holnis, including around 65 breeding bird species. These two figures describe different aspects of the birdlife: the total number of species that can be observed and the subset that breeds there.
Schlei Nature Park offers rolling hills, forests, hedgerow landscapes, rapeseed and grain fields, as well as sandy beaches and bathing coves. The Schlei’s brackish-water areas provide a habitat for numerous endangered bird species. Guided nature tours are offered in the nature park; the Viking-Frisian Way, the Ox Road and 15 signposted themed cycle routes also pass through the landscape. This adds more options to Niesgrau’s walking and riding trails: guided nature experiences and signposted cycling routes.
Culture and history in Schleswig-Flensburg
History is another theme in the wider Schleswig-Flensburg destination. Haithabu and the Danevirke have been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since June 2018. More than 25 kilometres of the Danevirke rampart still remain today. In Idstedt, the historic memorial site and museum provide information about German-Danish history surrounding the uprising of 1848 and the Battle of Idstedt.
Kappeln offers another cultural connection: from 1986 to 2012, the town served as a filming location for the television series “Der Landarzt” under the name “Deekelsen.” The wider Schleswig-Flensburg destination therefore offers historical and film-history connections alongside nature and coastal themes.
