Treßsee lies north of Großsolt and is fed by the Bondenau; it is considered the source of the Treene. For a nature-focused stay, the freely accessible “Around Treßsee” hike offers a specific option. It starts near Großsolt church on the Bondenau, follows the Rehweg for most of the route, passes Großsoltwesterholz and the Treßsee lowlands, and returns in the direction of Großsolt’s sports ground.
Hiking around Treßsee
The hike highlights the Upper Treene Landscape, Großsolt Moor, the Treene and the Dune at Treßsee protected area as landscape themes. The lake is also connected to the Upper Treene Landscape project; the Dune at Treßsee nature reserve lies north of the lake. The local nature theme thus encompasses both river and lowland landscapes, as well as a protected-area context.
Nature themes in the Schleswig-Flensburg destination
In the wider Schleswig-Flensburg destination, Geltinger Birk complements the focus on nature with well-developed paths and guided hikes that share information about flora and fauna. At 773 hectares, it is the largest nature reserve in the district. At Holnis, the focus is on birdlife: more than 130 bird species can be observed there, including around 65 breeding species. The Holnis peninsula is also the northernmost tip of the Schleswig-Holstein young moraine landscape.
In Schlei Nature Park, gentle hills, forests, hedgerow landscapes, fields of rapeseed and grain, sandy beaches and bathing coves shape the scenery. The Schlei’s brackish-water areas provide habitat for numerous endangered bird species. Nature tours are offered there; the Viking-Frisian Way, the Ox Road and 15 signposted themed cycling routes also pass through the landscape. These regional options differ in form from the individual hike around Treßsee: here, the focus is on guided nature tours and cycling routes, while there it is on a specifically described hiking route.
Culture and history in Schleswig-Flensburg
In the wider Schleswig-Flensburg destination, Haithabu and the Danevirke have been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since June 2018. More than 25 kilometres of the Danevirke rampart still remain today. The Idstedt Memorial and Museum offers another historical perspective: it provides information about German-Danish history surrounding the uprising of 1848 and the Battle of Idstedt. A UNESCO World Heritage Site and a museum focused on history thus offer different ways to explore the past.
Film history and cycling are also themes in the Schleswig-Flensburg destination. From 1986 to 2012, Kappeln served as a filming location for the TV series “Der Landarzt” under the name “Deekelsen”. Arnis and the Schlei were filming locations for a German adaptation of “Five Friends”. Arnis is also a destination for watersports enthusiasts and the starting point of the 25-kilometre SchleiUferTörn, a circular cycling tour around the central part of the Schlei. These themes offer different focuses for trip planning, from historic places and film history to watersports and a specific cycling route.
